Los Angeles Angels Third Baseman Antony Rendon Suffers Injury Setback

Los Angeles Angels

Los Angeles Angels Third Baseman Anthony will be out “long-term” after undergoing hip surgery. The news was announced on Wednesday by General Manager Perry Minasian. Rendon sustained the injury during the offseason and his status for the 2025 regular season is uncertain.

Rendon’s tenure with the Los Angeles Angels has been an abject failure. Following the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, he has played in 205 games over the past four seasons. He has also played no more than 58 games in a season. Rendon came to Los Angeles after winning the 2019 World Series with the Washington Nationals. He signed a 7-year $245 million contract that offseason and was looked at as a franchise cornerstone. That never came to fruition, and his 2025 season is no guarantee. Will he ever play for the franchise again?

Los Angeles Angels Offseason Summary

With Rendon’s injury woes over the last four seasons, it was going to be tough to count on him to be a contributing member of the ballclub. Today’s injury news reinforced that rationale. Following a disappointing regular season, Los Angeles had a solid offseason. With Rendon out of the picture, the Angels will turn to Yoan Moncada to man the position in 2025.

Other marquee offseason moves for the Los Angeles Angels were Closer Kenley Jansen, Starting Pitcher Kyle Hendricks, Starting Pitcher Yusei Kikuchi, and Catcher Travis d’Arnaud. Another huge addition to LA’s roster for 2025 will be the return of Mike Trout. Much like Rendon, he has been unable to stay on the field over the previous four seasons.

Final Thoughts

Rendon’s contract has been so bad it could go down as one of the worst in MLB history. He did himself no favors by saying last year that baseball has “never been a top priority for me.” That sort of lackadaisical attitude is not one you want to see from a player you gave hundreds of millions of dollars. If this is the end of Rendon’s time with the Los Angeles Angels, it will not go down as a good marriage for either side.
