Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl Loss Part Of a Bigger Trend

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs picked a miserable time to play their worst game in three years. They were dominated 40-22 by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. The game was not as close as the final score made it seem. Philadelphia dominated from the opening kickoff. Even though Kansas City lost, and the way it looked was shocking, it followed a recent trend in the National Football League.

Over the last 39 NFL seasons, seven teams have won 15+ games in a single regular season. None of them would go win the Super Bowl that season. The 2024-2025 Kansas City Chiefs were the latest team that fell into that bucket. The other teams on that list are the 2007 New England Patriots, 2024 Detroit Lions, 2015 Carolina Panthers, 2011 Green Bay Packers, 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers, and 1998 Minnesota Vikings.

Surprisingly, no team with 15+ wins has not won the Super Bowl in nearly four decades. The San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears accomplished it during back-to-back seasons in 1984 and 1985 respectively. Will this trend be broken sooner rather than later?

Kansas City Chiefs Have a Miserable Game

The Chiefs headed down to New Orleans looking to complete the first three-peat of the Super Bowl era, but they left with more questions than answers. It was not the fact the Kansas City Chiefs lost, it was how they looked last night against the Philadelphia Eagles. Kansas City’s offense had no answer for an Eagles defense that put forth one of the best performances in Super Bowl history. Philadelphia jumped out to a whopping 34-0 lead.

The Eagles sacked Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes a career-high six times. The all-time great looked lifeless for the majority of the game. Kansas City had one first down in the first half and the offense had a pitiful 23 yards in the first half. Even though Mahomes tossed three late touchdowns, he had arguably the worst performance of his career in the biggest game of his life. He finished the Super Bowl with a QBR of 11.4. It was the second-worst output of his career. Mahomes finished with a 9.9 QBR on October 24, 2021, on the road against the Tennessee Titans.

Final Thoughts

It was a night to forget for the Kansas City Chiefs. Their odds of being in the Super Bowl again with a chance to three-peat is essentially zero. Kansas City found itself on the doorstep of history and laid a massive egg. They will look to rebound next season as they enter an offseason where a bunch of self-reflection will take place.
