The Islanders are making some offseason news. They signed extremely large defensive prospect Malte Gustafsson, their first-round draft pick, to an entry-level contract. He adds to an impressive young defensive corps. However, that is not all. The Islanders ranked on July 14 by “The Athletic” 5 prospects in the top 100 prospects in hockey. They have several other prospects, and the future is bright for the much-maligned franchise.

The Islanders have never signed a big free agent, but will have more than $40 million in salary cap space in the 2027-28 season. They could attract one. With Matthew Schaefer and the raft of young talent, the Island will be an attractive destination. Do you think the Islanders will be able to sign a big free agent after this season?

The Isles have signed their first-round draft pick, Malte Gustafsson, to an entry-level contract. They are one of the first teams to reach an agreement with their 2026 draft picks. Gustafsson is at 6 feet 4 and only 18. Internationally, Gustafsson has already built a decorated résumé with Sweden’s junior national teams, picking up bronze at both the 2024 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge and this year’s World Junior A Challenge.

He adds to an impressive young defensive corps for the team. The corps includes holdovers Adam Pelech, Ryan Pulock, Tony DeAngelo, Aleksander Romanov, and Scott Mayfield. Young star Matthew Schaefer, the unanimous Calder Trophy winner, is a cornerstone around which the team can build. Young pieces include Isaiah George, Kashawn Aitcheson, Jesse Pulkkinen and now Gustafsson. There are many more skilled young blueliners in the system.

The second piece of important Islanders offseason news is that five of their prospects cracked “The Athletic’s” top-100 list. With 32 teams in the league, the average club would land roughly three names on a list that size, so New York is well above the curve. Gustafsson comes in at No. 34, Ritchie sits at No. 36, Eklund is No. 43, and Aitcheson rounds out the group at No. 50. The latter two were both first-round selections a year ago. Eiserman checks in at No. 72. It’s more evidence that things are trending upward for the franchise.

Veteran Shift?

Islanders’ longtime captain Anders Lee has signed a free agent contract with the Utah Mammoth. He has played with the Islanders since the team drafted him in 2009. His production has plummeted in recent seasons, and he scored only 19 goals last season.

In addition to Lee, the team may trade away other veterans in the upcoming season. Making those trades would remake the Islanders’ roster. There are a lot of potential moves General Manager Matthew Darche could make. Veterans who could be dealt include Kyle Palmieri, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, and the popular trade-rumor target this offseason, Matthew Barzal.

Conclusion

The Islanders made some offseason news by signing first-round draft pick Malte Gustafsson to an entry-level contract. The team is one of the first to sign their 2026 draft pick. Gustafsson adds to an impressive prospect list for the team, which is giving fans of the team some hope for the future. This should be a season of transition for the team, with several veterans getting dealt. This could also be a rough season on the Island, with the team potentially missing the playoffs for the third consecutive year. At least there is some hope for the future.
