Florida Panthers-Paul Maurice Agree On Extension

Paul Maurice will remain with the Florida Panthers for years to come.

The Florida Panthers have agreed to terms with Head Coach Paul Maurice to stay with the Panthers. The terms of the contract have not been released as of yet. It is expected to be a multi-year contract. Paul Maurice has taken the Florida Panthers to the Stanley Cup Finals twice in two years and won its first Stanley Cup in franchise history in 2024. Maurice has coached the second-most games all-time in NHL history, with 1,855 entering Tuesday. He trails just Scotty Bowman, who coached 2,141 games.

Florida Panthers-Maurice Agree On Multi-Year Deal

Paul Maurice was coming into this season in the last season of his three-year contract with the Florida Panthers. On Tuesday, the Panthers agreed to terms to extend Maurice in a long-term contract. Panthers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Bill Zito said in a press release:

“Paul has resolutely led our organization to unprecedented success during his relatively short tenure in South Florida, He is a superb communicator and leader for our staff and players, possessing a keen strategic mind for the game. We are excited for Paul and his staff to continue to keep the Florida Panthers as a destination franchise for the foreseeable future.”

Maurice’s Historic Coaching Career

Maurice is in the 27th season of a head coaching career that began with the Hartford Whalers in 1995. He also has coached the Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Winnipeg Jets. He also took the Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup in 2002 but lost in five games against the Detroit Red Wings.

In the past two seasons with the Florida Panthers, Maurice has led them to be the top 10 offensive team in the league. The Panthers have 35.1 shots on goal per game, 3.37 goals per game, and a 23.0 percent power play success rate. The Florida Panthers defense also has limited opponents to 2.41 goals against and 27.8 shots against per game last season, the lowest totals in franchise history.

The Florida Panthers went from having inconsistent seasons for 30 years and making the playoffs and losing in the early rounds to finally being consistent and making the Stanley Cup Finals two years in a row. The Panthers will look to have another successful season this season under Head Coach Paul Maurice.

Final Thoughts

The Florida Panthers and Maurice will look ahead to Tuesday night’s game against the Minnesota Wild and then head on road for a five-game road trip starting in New York against the Rangers, a rematch of the Eastern Conference Finals. Then the Panthers will head to their Global Series in Finland against the Dallas Stars on November 1 and 2.

Paul Maurice isn’t the only person on the Florida Panthers roster with contract extensions. Carter Verhaeghe signed an eight-year contract, along with Sam Reinhart an eight-year contract this offseason and at the beginning of the season. The Florida Panthers have also signed free agent players to boost their fourth line after letting go of players this offseason to clear cap space for the big contracts for their top players.
