Tai Tuivasa Gets New Opponent For UFC Perth After Late Change
Tai Tuivasa will remain in front of his home audience following a last-minute change in opponent that rescued his planned fight at UFC Fight Night 275 in Perth, Western Australia. The Australian heavyweight was initially scheduled to fight against Sean Sharaf next week; however, Sharaf pulled out due to an injury, leaving Tuivasa without an opponent.
Luckily, the event has been saved by the intervention of British heavyweight Louie Sutherland, who has accepted the fight on short notice. The UFC officials confirmed the new fight on Friday, keeping Tuivasa on the card at the RAC Arena. For Tuivasa, the late change means he still has another crucial chance to revive his career in front of the supportive Australian fans.
Important Battle For Tuivasa
A couple of fighters on the roster require a win more than Tuivasa does at the moment. The popular heavyweight is scheduled for the fight with a six-fight losing streak, and his next bout is under tremendous pressure.
Once viewed as one of the most exciting knockout artists in the division, Tuivasa’s momentum has sharply declined over the last several years. His most recent win came more than four years ago when he knocked out former title challenger Derrick Lewis at UFC 271.
That performance represented the peak of a strong run in which Tuivasa won five consecutive fights and earned multiple performance bonuses. He reestablished himself as a dangerous contender capable of challenging the best heavyweights in the UFC. However, the division soon reminded him of its unforgiving nature.
Tough Run Against Elite Competition
Following the victory over Lewis, Tuivasa faced a brutal lineup of opponents. He was stopped in four consecutive fights against Ciryl Gane, Sergei Pavlovich, Alexander Volkov, and Marcin Tybura. Each of those losses came against high-level heavyweights, several of whom either challenged for titles or remained near the top of the rankings.
Following the defeats, Tuivasa returned in Aug. 2024 and dropped a close split decision to Jairzinho Rozenstruik. Although competitive, the result extended his losing streak and further complicated his future with the promotion.
He then stepped away from competition for more than a year before returning in January against Tallison Teixeira. While Tuivasa showed determination and toughness, he was again defeated, making it six straight losses. For many fighters, such a run would already lead to release from the UFC. That reality makes this next appearance especially significant.
Sutherland Accepts Short-Notice Opportunity
Louie Sutherland now steps into the fight with his own pressure to perform. The British heavyweight has yet to win inside the UFC, entering with a 0-2 promotional record. His debut setbacks have made this late opportunity especially important for his future in the organization. In Oct. 2025, Sutherland suffered a submission loss to Valter Walker, who finished him with a heel hook. It marked Walker’s fourth consecutive victory by the same technique.
Just a month ago, Sutherland was knocked out in the opening round by Brando Pericic in London. Despite those losses, accepting a short-notice bout against Tuivasa in enemy territory gives Sutherland a major chance to turn his UFC career around instantly.
High Stakes In Perth
The matchup now carries serious consequences for both men. For Tai, it is an opportunity to end a losing streak that has damaged what was once a highly promising career. Fighting in Perth provides him with home support and a familiar atmosphere, which may aid him in rebuilding confidence. For Sutherland, it is an opportunity to spoil the local celebration and earn the biggest win of his career.
Both fighters have nothing to lose but a great amount to win when they walk into UFC Perth. Tuivasa has not lost his popularity as a personality in the sport and continues to possess knockout power that can turn a fight around anytime. Sutherland, on the other hand, comes in hungry, desperate to demonstrate that he has a place on the UFC stage. Both men will be battling for more than a single victory when they come to the RAC Arena.
