Roy Jones Jr Open To Exhibition Fight With Thierry Henry
Roy Jones Jr. may be 57 years old, but the former pound-for-pound boxing star appears to have no intention of completely closing the door on future appearances in the ring. Almost six years since his last fight against Anthony Pettis and nearly three years since his exhibition match with Mike Tyson, Jones Jr has admitted that he would be willing to do another exhibition match, and Thierry Henry, a former football star, is one person that he would not mind fighting.
Jones Jr Says Right Offer Could Bring Him Back
Speaking recently, Jones Jr. explained that financial motivation would be the deciding factor behind any comeback opportunity. Roy Jones Jr stated that because of his background in the sport and his status, he would consider an exhibition with Thierry Henry if the money was right. He added that the right offer would likely be enough reason for him to get back into shape and return to training.
He also admitted that after spending so many years preparing for fights, he has little desire to train again without a worthwhile opportunity. However, if a serious financial proposal were presented for an exhibition, he would be open to stepping back into the ring. Jones Jr. further suggested that Henry would be one of the few figures capable of funding such an event if he truly wanted to pursue it.
Legendary Career Still Commands Attention
At the peak of his career, Jones Jr. was considered one of the best fighters in boxing. He has been a champion in several weight classes and eventually became the world heavyweight champion in 2003 with a resounding win over John Ruiz.
He also won key fights against Bernard Hopkins and James Toney, among other great boxers. At the height of his career, he established himself among boxing’s all-time greats. Despite his later career experiences of painful defeats to Antonio Tarver, Glen Johnson, and Danny Green, the fact that he is one of the most talented fighters in the sport keeps his legacy intact.
Thierry Henry’s Fitness Sparks Speculation
Interest in the potential crossover increased after Henry recently shared images of his physical transformation, showing himself in excellent shape. The former Arsenal and France striker has never publicly shown interest in boxing, but his connection to the sport has grown through his regular work alongside broadcaster Kate Scott, who is married to trainer and former heavyweight contender Malik Scott.
Malik Scott Offers To Help Henry
Malik Scott also praised Henry’s mentality and athletic qualities, suggesting the football legend could succeed in combat sports if he chose to pursue it. Scott stated that Henry possesses the mental toughness required to compete at a high level and said his improved physique reflects discipline and lifestyle changes, including reducing sugar intake.
He added that Henry’s mindset and ability to overcome challenges during his football career are qualities that would translate well into boxing or any other sport. Scott indicated that in case Henry ever wanted to venture into boxing, he would be willing to train him at any time.
Football Great With Lasting Legacy
In 2023, Henry ended his football career following one of the most glorious careers of his generation. Having been brought to Arsenal in 1999 by Juventus, he turned into one of the most feared strikers in the world under the leadership of Arsene Wenger. He finished as Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer with 228 goals across two spells at the club and remains one of the Premier League’s greatest forwards, with only a select few players scoring more than his 175 league goals.
While no official plans exist for an exhibition between Roy Jones Jr and Thierry Henry, the idea has already generated attention due to the fame of both men. Whether it remains playful speculation or develops into a genuine crossover event, Jones Jr has made one thing clear: if the right offer arrives, he is still willing to lace up the gloves once more.
