The rematch between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, for which fans have been waiting for too long, has been cast into doubt just weeks after it was officially announced. The proposed fight, originally planned for September, was supposed to be a professionally licensed fight broadcast live by Netflix at The Sphere in Las Vegas.

It was meant to be a big international affair, 11 years after their first historic meeting, which was one of the most commercially successful boxing bouts.

Muddiness Of Fight Form and Location

The situation became even more tense when Mayweather subsequently explained that the match was being treated as an exhibition. This will not be a fully sanctioned professional fight. This change brought into doubt whether some of his most important records, such as his 50-0 professional record, would be at stake.

There were also uncertainties that were going on concerning the venue. Although The Sphere in Las Vegas was initially promoted as the host location, it is said that the final decision has not yet been made, and the status of the event is unknown.

Pacquiao Camp Is Not Pessimistic

Despite the uncertainty, Pacquiao’s team has continued to insist that the agreement remains valid. Representatives have asserted that the deals were done on contractual grounds and that monetary deals have been made.

According to Jas Mathur, the CEO of MP Promotions, Mayweather had a deadline of April 14 to agree to take part in the already planned professional match. He thinks the fight would go on as scheduled, implying that the two sides would still go ahead and stick to the deal.

Jas included that, “Floyd’s signature is on multiple contracts. Professional fight … Netflix doesn’t want to be involved in [an exhibition], we don’t want that to happen. Look, Floyd cares about money … The attorneys are [speaking].

“[Mayweather’s team] just have to see the light as to the platform and the size of what Netflix is, and all the opportunities it can bring. Tomorrow [is the deadline.] 14th. End of business day. We’re getting ahead. As long as he’s got smart people around him that can see the size of the opportunity, then they can make him a lot of money. More money that he’s made in the last five years.”

Mayweather Responds On Social Media

On the deadline date, Mayweather spoke on the matter indirectly by commenting on social media. In reaction to a post by ES News stating that the fight was confirmed, he refuted the report and speculated that no final deal had been made. Floyd Mayweather stated, “This is not true! [Media outlet] Fight Hype will be first to know after everything is worked out.”

Mayweather pointed out that no official updates will be made until all the details are sorted, and added that proper information will be provided by official boxing media.

The back-and-forth wording of both camps has rendered the rematch ambiguous. Pacquiao’s camp remains hopeful that the event will still take place. However, Mayweather’s response suggests that the matter is still unresolved. This has created endless speculation among the fans as many are left wondering whether the bout will be held as announced, or it will be postponed or even changed to another form.

What Could be the Possible Outcome

Further updates are expected from Pacquiao’s promotional team in the coming days, which will likely provide more clarity on the progress of the negotiations. To date, the event is left in limbo. The rematch would be one of the biggest boxing matches in recent history, if it is resolved, but until then, it remains unclear if it will happen.
