Islam Makhachev Fires Back At Ian Machado Garry As UFC 329 Return Talk Heats Up

Islam Makhachev (blue gloves) celebrates after defeating Jack Della Maddalena

Islam Makhachev, the UFC welterweight champion, has lashed out as Ian Machado Garry suggested that the champion might be stalling on a fight. The exchange has added more tension to the welterweight division, with questions about Makhachev’s next move.

Earlier this week, Makhachev sparked interest when he suggested he could return in July, with many speculating that the date could be UFC 329 in International Fight Week. The UFC has not officially announced the full lineup for the event, but speculation continues over who will headline the card and whether Makhachev will be involved. The scenario is now more interesting because there are multiple challengers vying for a chance at the belt.

Questions Over Injury Delay

Makhachev has not defended his welterweight title since he won it from Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 last year. Rumors of a title defense, including speculation of a rumored fight with Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250, have continued ever since. The fight allegedly fell through due to an inability to agree on the deal.

Part of the reason for Makhachev’s delayed return was a reported hand injury suffered during the victory over Maddalena. However, not everyone has accepted that explanation. Ian Machado Garry, who has positioned himself as one of the top contenders in the division, publicly questioned whether the injury was legitimate and suggested the champion was avoiding a fight.

Garry Issues Public Challenge

After Makhachev hinted at a July return, Ian Garry wasted little time responding through social media. He pointed out the mixed timeline surrounding the champion’s recovery, noting that previous comments suggested an August return while the latest statement mentioned July. Garry also stated that he has been ready for months and accused Makhachev of holding up the division.

He further suggested that contenders were now waiting for the champion to commit to a date and opponent. The comments quickly gained traction online, with many fans seeing it as a direct attempt to pressure Makhachev into accepting a title defense.

Makhachev Responds

Makhachev soon replied through his own social media account, dismissing Garry’s criticism and making it clear that he believes the issue is not his health. The champion stated that Garry should not concern himself with injuries and insisted that he is prepared to compete at any time. He also added that he is waiting for the contract, implying that the responsibility now lies elsewhere. The brief but pointed response further intensified the growing rivalry between the two fighters.

Garry has made his wish clear, but he is not the only contender with a strong case for a title shot. Michael Morales is also unbeaten in the UFC and strengthened his standing with an impressive finish over Sean Brady at UFC 322. Meanwhile, the winner of the upcoming clash between Jack Della Maddalena and Carlos Prates could also emerge as a serious option for the next championship bout. That leaves the UFC matchmakers with multiple directions to consider.

UFC 329 Announcement Could Be Near

As International Fight Week draws near, it’s likely the UFC will soon make plans for UFC 329 official. If Makhachev is indeed looking for a July date, we could be close to an official announcement. Whether the champion faces Garry, Morales, or another contender, the division appears ready to move forward after months of waiting.

In the meantime, the trash talk between Makhachev and Garry has only heightened anticipation for what’s next. If the match does take place, the lead-up in the media may only serve to add to the intrigue.
