Francis Ngannou Criticizes UFC Heavyweight Management Amid Division Uncertainty

A Francis Ngannou-Eddie Hall fight could be in the works.

Francis Ngannou has expressed strong concerns about the state of the UFC heavyweight division, citing ongoing issues with how it is being managed. The former UFC heavyweight champion pointed to Tom Aspinall’s case as a recent illustration of systemic issues within the promotion. The remarks are timed as the heavyweight division has been accused of being lazy and failing to arrange major matches.

A New Chapter

Ngannou has retained the heavyweight title since 2023, having parted with the UFC in a highly publicized and contentious split. He has taken a chance outside of the promotion and has entered the boxing ring against some of the best in the game, like Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

Besides appearances in boxing, Ngannou has also competed in mixed martial arts under the Professional Fighters League banner, where he has won the PFL Super Fights heavyweight title with a first-round knockout win over Renan Ferreira in Oct. 2024.

Concerns Over Heavyweight Division Management

Ngannou expressed his thoughts on the current situation in the UFC heavyweight division. He indicated that the division is lacking in wise decision-making at the promotional level, which has affected the entire division.

He noted that several situations in the division have yet to turn into meaningful fights, impacting both fighters and fans. Ngannou clarified that his comments were not aimed at individual managers, but rather at the broader promotional system responsible for matchmaking and scheduling.

Tom Aspinall’s Situation Raises Questions

Ngannou, particularly, mentioned Tom Aspinall’s condition as an example of such things. After Aspinall got his eye injury in his fight against Ciryl Gane at the UFC 321 fight in Oct. 2025, he has been out of action.

Despite his absence, developments in the division have continued, including the creation of an interim title fight involving Alex Pereira. The move has faced criticism from observers, who have questioned the division’s direction with a top contender still out of action. Ngannou broadened the concern that the heavyweight division lacks clarity and consistency in its current structure.

A Shift In Mindset On Opponent Selection

Ngannou also talked about choosing the right opponent to avoid delays in fights. He acknowledged that focusing too heavily on specific high-profile fights in the past did not always lead to the desired outcomes.

He referenced the long-discussed but never-realized fight with Jon Jones as an example of how pursuing a single matchup can stop a rising fighter. He also mentioned the importance of staying active and taking fights that make sense in the moment, rather than waiting for ideal scenarios that could never happen.

Plans For the Next Fight

Ngannou is set to return to action on May 16, where he will face Philipe Lins at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood. The bout will take place on the first-ever MVP MMA card streamed on Netflix, marking another step in Ngannou’s evolving career outside the UFC.

As he continues to build his legacy across multiple combat sports platforms, Ngannou remains vocal about the challenges facing the heavyweight division he once ruled. His comments add to the ongoing conversation about how the sport’s biggest weight class is being managed—and what changes may be needed moving forward.
