Terence Crawford Picks Dream Fight For Gervonta Davis Amid Ongoing Career Uncertainty

Gervonta Davis attends a preseason game between the Miami Heat and the Milwaukee Bucks

Terence Crawford has revealed the one matchup he would most like to see involving Gervonta Davis as the lightweight star’s career continues to face uncertainty. The former multiple-division world champion spoke out as the speculation about Davis’ boxing future continues to increase.

Davis has not fought since March 2025, when many felt he was fortunate to draw with Lamont Roach. In spite of the questionable result, Davis was able to hold onto his WBA lightweight title, but has not been overly active.

A rematch with Roach was planned, but these plans were put on hold as Davis began looking elsewhere, including talks with Jake Paul for an exhibition fight that never happened.

Legal and “Champion In Recess”

Outside issues have also affected Davis’ career. The World Boxing Association (WBA) recently declared him “champion in recess,” which is a term used to describe a boxer who has been inactive for a long period but still holds a title.

During this period, he also faced allegations of domestic violence from his former partner, Courtney Rossel, which further complicated discussions about his return. With Davis sidelined, attention has turned to the lightweight division’s top contenders. Floyd Schofield, the WBA’s number one-ranked challenger, has publicly called for either a mandatory fight or an opportunity to compete for a vacant title.

Despite these developments, Davis has shown more interest in revisiting past rivalries, including a potential rematch with Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz at 140 pounds. Gervonta previously defeated Cruz in 2021, but the idea of running it back has reportedly remained on his radar.

Crawford Prefers a Bigger Name Fight

While some fans and contenders push for fights against Schofield or Cruz, Crawford believes there is a more exciting option available. Crawford made it clear that he is less interested in seeing Davis take on those names and instead would prefer a high-profile clash against Shakur Stevenson.

He described the matchup as one of the most compelling fights that could be made in boxing, highlighting the stylistic contrast and undefeated pedigree of both fighters. Crawford emphasized that a Davis vs Stevenson fight would generate significant attention and represent one of the strongest possible pairings in the sport today.

Stevenson Has Long Pursued the Fight

Shakur Stevenson has repeatedly called for a showdown with Gervonta over the past few years. The WBO super-lightweight champion has often expressed frustration at the lack of progress in making the fight happen, despite public interest and continued demand from fans.

Stevenson recently put on a strong showing against Teofimo Lopez in January, further cementing his status as one of boxing’s premier pound-for-pound fighters and further adding to the desire for a major unification event. Yet while there is a growing appetite for a Davis vs Stevenson clash, it is not clear this will be made a reality in the immediate future.

The Likely Scenario For a Superfight

While Crawford’s remarks have once again sparked the possibility of a Davis vs Stevenson fight, there are still several hurdles in the way. Davis’ circumstances and contractual and promotional considerations make it unlikely this fight will be finalized any time soon.

Similarly, Stevenson has also seemed less confident that Davis will fight him soon, given the uncertainty over “Tank’s” comeback schedule. Crawford’s support for the fight adds to the growing sentiment that Davis vs Stevenson is one of boxing’s most exciting and unfulfilled matchups.
