Aljamain Sterling Demands Title Shot After Dominant Win At UFC Vegas 116

Aljamain Sterling made a strong statement about his championship intentions after producing an impressive main event victory over Youssef Zalal at UFC Vegas 116. The former Bantamweight champion dominated the match and secured a win that further made his case to compete for a featherweight title shot in the future.

Sterling went into the fight hoping to continue the momentum he gained when he moved to the 145-pound weight class. After five rounds, he had done just that in one of his cleanest performances since making the move.

Sterling Delivers a Wrestling Masterclass

From the first round, Sterling dominated Zalal’s wrestling. He continually brought the action to the ground and dominated exchanges with superior pressure, positioning, and movement.

When Zalal tried to open up or return to the striking distance, Aljamain swiftly shut him down with a takedown attempt or clinch. While controlling the action on the mat, he mixed strikes with submission attempts and gave his opponent very little chance to recover. It was a patient and controlled performance that was reminiscent of much of Sterling’s championship career at bantamweight.

After five rounds, all three judges scored the fight 49-45 in his favor, giving Sterling a unanimous decision victory. The result improved his featherweight record to 3-1 since climbing up in the new weight.

Sterling Eyes Another Championship Run

Following the win, Sterling spoke confidently about his ambitions and explained that he still intends to make one more run toward a UFC title. He praised Yousaf Zalal as a durable and difficult opponent, noting that prior training experience with him had shown how hard he would be to finish. Sterling added that patience and preparation played key roles in the performance, and he expressed satisfaction with a dominant win.

He also made sure to call out the top names in the division, directly mentioning Movsar Evloev and reigning champion Alexander Volkanovski as future targets. The comments made it clear that he sees himself firmly in the title conversation.

Seeking Redemption Against Evloev

Aljamain’s only defeat since joining the featherweight division came in a competitive contest against Movsar Evloev. Since then, Evloev has remained unbeaten and is widely considered one of the leading contenders for the championship after his recent victory over Lerone Murphy.

Still, Sterling believes his résumé and longevity deserve recognition. He pointed to the years of work he has put into the promotion, highlighting that he has spent more than a decade on the UFC roster and consistently faced elite competition throughout his career.

He argued that he has rarely been matched against unranked opponents and has continuously competed against top names since early in his UFC run. His message was direct: he believes he should be next in line for a title shot. Although the defeat ended Youssef Zalal’s unbeaten streak since returning to the UFC roster, he handled the loss with class.

Zalal praised Aljamain for an outstanding performance and acknowledged the challenge presented by the former champion’s skill set. He also vowed to bounce back once again, referencing previous setbacks that he had already overcome in his career. Despite the disappointment, Zalal’s attitude suggested confidence that he could still make another rise in the division.

Featherweight Picture Becomes More Interesting

Sterling’s overwhelming win adds another contender to the bustling featherweight competition. Given the presence of Volkanovski as champion and challengers like Evloev, the emergence of a former bantamweight champion with title experience opens up new possibilities for a top contender.

Whether he will be offered an immediate title shot or another eliminator bout remains to be seen. But he reminded the UFC at UFC Vegas 116 that he hasn’t lost the ability to compete for a title.
