The New York Jets have officially begun clearing salary cap space as they have released wide receiver Davante Adams, making him a free agent. This move saved the Jets $29.9 million in salary cap space as Adams did not have any guaranteed money remaining on his contract. There were rumors regarding the potential of a trade happening, but the cap space relief could make the New York Jets have a chance at building the roster with the new regime at One Jets Drive.
Davante Adams Cut by New York Jets
The New York Jets made the decision to move on from Davante Adams after trading a conditional third-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft for him ahead of last season’s trade deadline. He played 11 games with the Jets last season and had 67 receptions on 114 targets for 854 yards (12.7 yards per catch) with seven receiving touchdowns. However, the targets seemingly were taken away from wide receiver Garrett Wilson on the roster and that caused a bit of a riff.
Now the New York Jets have decisions to make with general manager Darren Mougey and coach Aaron Glenn heading into the free agency period. The team can now figure out who they want to bring in as the new regime attempts to make an impact in their first season.
Where will Davante Adams play next season?
Davante Adams is now one of the top wide receivers available in free agency and there are going to be a lot of suitors trying to get the 32-year-old receiver, who has proven to still be an elite wide receiver. One team that seemingly makes a lot of sense to go after Adams is the Kansas City Chiefs as they need a top-end wide receiver and can offer him a chance to compete for a Super Bowl. Another team that needs a wide receiver is the Los Angeles Chargers as they have $66 million in cap space to use and can easily entice the veteran wide receiver with having Justin Herbert throwing him the football.
No matter where Davante Adams is playing next season, there are going to be a lot of teams that are going to be putting in offers. It will be interesting to see as reports have said he prefers to be on the West Coast, but this is simply something that could change depending on the money and the situation of the teams trying to sign him.
