James Madison Loses 14-10 For Seventh Loss In a Row

James Madison scored 10 runs and lost.

James Madison lost 14-10 today to Appalachian State. They scored 10 runs and still lost. They got swept for the second weekend in a row, and they have lost seven games in a row. They are now 6-11 in the conference, and 16-22 overall. The Mountaineer improved to 10-8 in the conference, and they are 22-16 overall.

The team scored 10 runs in the loss, so there were some great hitting performances. Senior Jack Guerrero and junior Kyle Langley each had three-hit games for the Dukes, tying career highs for both players. Guerrero went 3-for-4 with a walk, a run scored, and a run batted in and two doubles, while Langley went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Will the Dukes be able to capitalize on this offensive outburst to win some games?

There was a substantial amount of scoring in this game. Even James Madison, who lost, scored 10 runs in the second marathon in a row, 14-10. That said, the Dukes never led after the second inning. The Mountaineers score seven unanswered runs in the third and fourth innings. That offensive outburst made the score 9-4 and probably put the game out of reach.

James Madison scored three runs next, and three more in the rest of the game, but that was not enough as the Mountaineers were scoring as well. The Dukes used six pitchers in the game, and that is not the formula to win baseball games.

Duke Offensive Performances

All in all, James Madison had 13 hits and scored 10 runs. The standouts on offense were Langley and Guerrero, who both had three hits, as mentioned above. There were seven other Duke hits. One of those was a home run by Jack Cannizaro. He also had a sacrifice fly. He drove in two of the 10 Duke runs.

For James Madison, Jack Anderson and Jack Cannizzaro both hit doubles, and both Anderson and Cannizzaro drove in two runs in the game. They were joined with two runs batted in by both Kyle Langley and Ike Schmidly. Jaden Kinsler, a pitcher for the Dukes, deserves mention. He pitched two and two-thirds innings. He did not allow a run and struck out six batters.

Appalachian State Offensive Performances

This was another fantastic offensive performance from the Mountaineers. Ethan Puig was three for five with four runs batted in. Five players had two runs batted in. Steve Smith, Kameron Miller, Jalen Stewart, Drew Dupont, and Charlie Evans. Miller hit a home run. They had a bunch of baserunners. They left 11 on base in the game. They did strike out 12 times, but they got 18 hits. Their entire batting order, save one, had six plate appearances.

Pitching Woes

With so many runs scored, it is not surprising that there were pitching woes in the game. As mentioned above, James Madison did use six pitchers. Tyler Lutz gave up six runs in 2.2 innings. He started the game for the Dukes. He surrendered eight hits, and it took him 69 pitches to fail to complete three innings. Kinsler had another good game, pitching two and two-thirds innings, without giving up a run, and striking out six batters. However, he was basically an aberration. Holden McKinney, Sam Pearne, and Griffin Madden pitched poorly.

Appalachian State used four pitchers. Tanner Nolan started the game for them and gave up six runs in six innings pitched. The second pitcher for the Mountaineers fared little better. JC Garcia gave up three runs in a third of an inning. Ethan Wilson and Jordan Fuller combined to pitch the final 2.2 innings; they gave up only one unearned run. They faced a combined 11 batters and gave up only two hits.
