This was a forgettable game for James Madison. They needed a better effort coming into this game with four losses in a row. They got beaten badly at home in this game. They got only a few hits and gave up a whole lot of runs.

Appalachian State got a great pitching performance from Nick Dirito. He gave up only two hits in eight innings pitched. It is true what they say: good pitching does beat good hitting. Appalachian State scored 10 runs in this game, getting the 10th in the ninth inning. They hit three home runs and managed to take advantage of a Madison error to score a run.

Good Pitching Beats Good Hitting

It happens time and time again, though you often hear the saying during the Major League Baseball Playoffs. Good pitching beats good hitting. There are some good hitters in the James Madison batting order, but they were spellbound by Dirito.

He threw 104 pitches in 8 innings, while giving up only 2 hits. James Madison did not score off him. He walked only one batter and threw 74 strikes. One would not know it. Coming into the game, he was 3-3 with a 7.23 earned run average. Ethan Wilson pitched the ninth inning. He only needed nine pitches to close out the game.

James Madison is Spellbound

To go hand in hand with good pitching is anemic offense. James Madison got only two hits in the first eight innings of the game. The hits were by Reece Moody, who doubled, and Kyle Langley. The Dukes did not have any stolen bases. They only benefited from one walk, and they struck out nine times.

Usually, the Dukes can count on some extra base hits and some stolen bases, but not tonight. One can really not say enough about the way the Dukes were dominated by a pitcher who came into the game with mediocre numbers.

A Powerful Display

Appalachian State hit three home runs in the game. Charlie Evans hit two of them. Jake Mummau hit the other one. They also had a double. However, they took advantage of the opportunities that were given to them, capitalizing on a JMU error to score another run. A truly equal opportunity drubbing.

Both home run hitters had three hits in the game, to lead all batters. They also, not surprisingly, had five of the ten runs batted in. Kameron Miller had 2 RBI in the game as well/

Time To Get Right

JMU has two winnable games against Appalachian State tomorrow and Sunday. It would be in their interest to win them. The season’s end is fast approaching. After this series, they have only four Sun Belt Conference series left this season before the conference tournament. It will be interesting to see if they can get back on track.
