No. 1 Athlete in 2027 Cycle, Honor Fa’-alave-Johnson, Commits to USC
The USC Trojans continued their recent recruiting success with today’s commitment from five-star athlete Honor Fa’-alave-Johnson. The top-rated athlete in the 2027 recruiting class, Fa’alave-Johnson is expected to play safety at the collegiate level. However, in high school, he shined on offense as well, and might be a two-way player for the Trojans.
Fa’-alave-Johnson’s Scouting Report
At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, Fa’-alave-Johnson has starred on both sides of the ball at Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego. He racked up eye-popping stats during his junior year. Offensively, he ran for 1,532 yards on 150 carries for an impressive average of 11.9 yards per carry with 23 touchdowns. He also caught 35 passes for 564 yards (16.1 YPC) and 7 TDs. As a defensive back, he made 40 tackles, reeled in 3 interceptions and forced a fumble.
He was also a track star in high school, posting a blazing 10.48 in the 100-meter dash as a sophomore.
In a scouting report filed on March 13, On3 characterizes Fa’-alave-Johnson as a “unique athlete” who could legitimately play four positions at the college level.” He is gifted enough to earn playing time immediately for a College Football Playoff Contender and projects as eventual early-round NFL draft pick.
Exhibiting explosive speed on the gridiron as a junior, he was clocked by GPS at 22.76 miles per hour. “At safety, he’s smart, rangy, has excellent ball skills and plays with a mean streak.” In addition to excelling on offense and defense, he could star on special teams as a kick returner.
In light of the foregoing, Fa’-alave-Johnson is rated the No. 1 athlete in the 2027 cycle by On3 and 247Sports.
Fa’alave-Johnson’s Choice
Fa’-alave-Johnson committed to USC after receiving offers from Oregon, Miami, Notre Dame, LSU, Texas, Alabama, Michigan and Oklahoma. Upon announcing his commitment, he stated that he is shutting down his recruiting process.
Assuming the accuracy of the forecast that Fa’alave-Johnson will primarily play safety he will join a defensive backfield featuring strong safety Kennedy Urlacher, free safety Christian Pierce and cornerback Marcelles Williams. They will all be playing under the stewardship of new defensive coordinator and former decorated head coach Gary Patterson.
Recent Recruiting Prowess
USC had the top-rated recruiting class in the nation in 2026, headlined by a quartet of five-star players — edge rusher Luke Wafle, tight end Mark Bowman, offensive tackle Keenyi Pepe and defensive lineman Jaimeon Winfield.
Much of the Trojans’ recent success on the recruiting trail is attributed to two Chads — Chad Bowden and Chad Savage. Bowden is USC’s new general manager. He is a nationally renowned college football administrator with a track record of assembling elite rosters.
Savage, the Trojans’ tight ends and inside receivers coach was primary recruiter involved in landing Fa’alave-Johnson’s commitment. He is credited with tutoring Biletnikoff Award winner Makai Lemon last season.

USC’s 2027 Class
Fa’alave-Johnson joins a trio of four-star recruits in the Trojans’ 2027 class — WRs Quentin Hale and Eli Woodard and cornerback Aaryn Washington — as USC seeks to follow up its nationally top-rated 2026 recruiting class with another elite cycle.
With the cache Fa’alave-Johnson brings, the rating of USC’s 2027 class is expected to vault up amongst the top 5 in the country. At this early stage in the 2027 recruiting cycle, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Ohio State hold the top spots in team recruiting rankings. Before landing Fa’alave-Johnson’s commitment, the Trojans’ class was rated No. 14.
