Behind a magnificent performance by rookie Marvin Harrision Jr. and a five-sack day by their defense, the Arizona Cardinals blew out the Los Angeles Rams 41-10 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The favored Rams fell to 0-2 for the season, while the Cardinals move to NFL Week 3 with a 1-1 record.
Harrison Starts with a Bang
The Cardinals immediately jumped on the Rams, as Kyler Murray connected with Harrison on two first-quarter touchdowns. Set up by two long James Connor runs, Murray hit Harrison for a 23-yard touchdown pass deep in the end zone only four minutes into the game. This was Harrison’s first-ever NFL touchdown.
Then, after a Rams punt, Murray wasted no time finding his favorite target again. On first down, a scrambling Murray found Harrison streaking down the field for another touchdown to give the Cardinals an early 14-0 lead.
Once again, the Cardinals’ defense smothered the Rams, and Murray and company took over at the Arizona 16-yard line. Two more long passes to Harrison and some tough mileage by Conner pushed the ball to the Rams’ 18-yard line. Murray went to work again, running for his life and hitting Elijah Higgins in the left corner of the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown. The two teams exchanged field goals, and the Cardinals headed into halftime with a commanding 24-3 lead.
Cardinals Are Not Finished
To open the second half, the Cardinals would undertake a protracted drive to put the game out of reach. Connor would do much of the work on the ground, including long runs of 26 and 22 yards, to help move the Cardinals’ offense to the Rams’ five-yard line.
Connor would take it the rest of the way, sweeping around the left end for another Arizona score and a 31-3 lead. The Cardinals would add a fourth-quarter field goal by Matt Prater and a Trey McBride fumble recovery for a touchdown to close out their scoring.
The Rams were limited to a Kyren Williams four-yard run for their only touchdown of the day. Both teams would fumble away the ball late, and the game ended with a Rams drive that ran out of time.
Summary
Murray would finish the game 17-21 with 266 yards passing and three touchdown passes. He also added 59 yards on the ground and kept several Arizona drives alive with his legs. Harrison had four catches for 130 yards and two scores.
James Connor would add 122 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Linebacker Dennis Gardeck would contribute three sacks and six tackles, leading the dominating Cardinals defense.
Arizona plays the Detroit Lions in another home game next week. The Rams come home to play the San Francisco 49ers in a key NFC West matchup.
