Australia Name Captain-Less Squad For Pakistan T20Is

Australia Cricket did not name a captain.

Cricket Australia’s selection committee for the men’s team has announced a 13-man list for the T20I series against Pakistan. However, they were unable to appoint a captain. All of Australia’s Test players had rested in preparation for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This trophy would be awarded following the Pakistan tour’s T20I matches. Glenn Maxwell, Australia’s most experienced player, has been picked to the T20 squad for a three-match series against Pakistan in the absence of Mitch Marsh. It’s expected that Maxwell might be allowed to lead the team. Meanwhile, the former captain Pat Cummins has been dropped off the 13-man list.

Maxwell As Australia’s T20 Captain

This T20I team is quite similar to the one that went to the United Kingdom, with Maxwell returning following a break during that trip. Matthew Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk are ready to bat after impressive performances in recent rounds. Maxwell has been the Melbourne Stars’ long-term captain in the Big Bash. He appears to be the best contender for the leadership, having played 113 T20s for Australia.

The coaching staff for the T20Is will also change. Andrew McDonald, Michael Di Venuto, and Daniel Vettori are preparing for the Test Series in Perth. Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, and Spencer Johnson have all returned to the club after injury. Injuries kept all three from joining on the last UK tour. Johnson has already returned to domestic cricket. Bartlett and Ellis, together with Sean Abbott, are thought to be a good fit for the three-game series, which runs November 14-18. While, Cummins, Mitch Starc, and Josh Hazlewood are all absent.

Inglis in Running for Australia’s Skipper

Surprisingly, Josh Inglis is also in the running to lead the AUS team. Josh Inglis, famous for his excellent reverse slams, is also being seen as a T20 team skipper. Greg Shipperd, the coach of New South Wales, offered him as an option for Australia’s Test opener. Inglis, on the other hand, is being considered for the first Test against India after scoring hundreds in consecutive Sheffield Shield games. Australia’s management will very certainly back his cause in the T20s.

Mohammad Rizwan has also been named Pakistan’s new white-ball captain for the forthcoming ODI and T20I series with Australia. Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Naseem Shah will return after being dropped for the final two Tests against England. The Australian T20I squad for the Pakistan series includes Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, and, Cooper Connolly. As well as Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Aaron Hardie. Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, and Adam Zampa.

Summing It Up

Australia will host Pakistan for three One-Day Internationals from November 4, followed by a three-match International series on November 14. The series will end on November 18, only four days before the first Test against India in Perth. None of the players nominated to the squad on Monday had ever captained Australia in any format. However, Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, Matthew Short, and Aaron Hardie have all captained their clubs in the Big Bash League.
