Team Venezuela Fends Off Team USA Rally to Clinch First WBC Championship

Venezuela outfielder Javier Sanoja (4) reacts after scoring a run against the United States in the ninth inning during the 2026 World Baseball Classic Championship game.

In one of the biggest underdog stories in sports history, Team Venezuela pulled off the impossible by knocking off heavily favored Team USA in nail-biting fashion to secure their first-ever World Baseball Classic Championship in Miami on Tuesday night.

Venezuela’s Pitching Sets the Table in Win

It takes guts to upset the goliaths of international baseball like Team USA and Team Japan; it also takes magnificent pitching performances as well, and Venezuela’s pitching staff once again threw another gem of a game. Team Venezuela’s pitchers were in full control for the majority of the game, as they only gave up 3 hits and 2 runs for the entire game. Venezuela’s starting pitcher, Eduardo Rodriguez, would come out of the gates strong, as he only gave up 1 hit while striking out 4 batters in 4 innings of work in the win.

Timely and Clutch Hitting Seals the Deal for Venezuela

Much like Team Venezuela’s win over Team Italy the night before, this game was going to be won or lost at the plate, and every Venezuelan batter seemed ready for the moment tonight. It wouldn’t take too long for the bats of Venezuela to get going, as Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. knocked a single past the infield to kickstart the team. Venezuela would collect 6 hits in the championship game.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Venezuelan win without Cincinnati Red third baseman Eugenio Suarez being the hero in the clutch once again for Venezuela. Suarez would step to the plate with the game tied 2-2 in the top of the ninth, needing only one solid swing to bring the speedy Javier Sanoja all the way home from second base. After managing to get to a full count, Suarez would finally find the baseball on the 7th pitch of the at-bat, as he launched the ball into the gap in left field for a double to break both the tie and Team USA fans hearts.

Team USA Refuses to Go Quietly in Championship Loss

There haven’t been many shutouts thrown in this year’s World Baseball Classic, but Team USA seemed on the verge of being thoroughly outclassed heading into the final two innings. After Team USA picked up two quick outs in the bottom of the 8th inning, the Americans seemingly couldn’t find a chink in this Venezuelan pitching staff’s armor.

That would change with the next two batters, with Chicago Cubs All-Star Pete Crow-Armstrong able to manage a walk to keep the inning alive for Team USA. It wouldn’t take long for the USA squad to make Venezuela pay for that mistake, as Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper would send the second pitch of his at-bat 432 feet into right-center field to tie the game and send the majority American crowd into a frenzy.

Unfortunately for Team USA, the bats would go silent once again as Venezuelan closer Daniel Palencia would shut the door on any more potential comebacks as he retired the side in order in the final inning to seal the championship win. Team USA would manage only 3 hits in the loss.

Kansas City Royals Star Maikel Garcia Named WBC MVP

After notching the first All-Star appearance of his career in a breakout year for the Kansas City Royals last season, Garcia made sure to show that last year wasn’t a one-off on the world stage this WBC. Garcia would take home the WBC MVP after putting together a magnificent tournament for his home country, as he batted .385 in the Classic while also hitting 1 home run and 7 RBIs.

Garcia said that the competitive nature that he showcased throughout the Classic is something that was instilled in him from a young age. “The place I come from in Venezuela, we are born with that characteristic, to be competitive no matter where you are playing or what you are playing. I love playing the best rivals.” Garcia said.
