The Michigan Wolverines will look very different in 2024. They sent a record 18 players to the NFL Combine, and their coaching staff has been overhauled. The most critical position they will have to figure out is the quarterback. JJ McCarthy only lost one game as a starter during his time at Michigan, so there are big shoes to fill. New offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell was asked about the quarterback situation and he remained cryptic on his plans.
Michigan Wolverines OC Kirk Campbell On QB Situation
Campbell is one of the familiar faces of the Michigan Wolverines in 2024. He was the quarterbacks coach, but when Sherrone Moore took over the head coach position, he was promoted as well. The good news about this is he knows the quarterback room well. There are definitely plenty of options. Jayden Denegal, Alex Orji, Jack Tuttle, Davis Warren, or Jadyn Davis could all feasibly take the reigns of the offense.
Campbell was very cryptic about his plans. Everything is on the table as they move into spring practices. He gave a very long answer when asked about the process of evaluating quarterbacks.
“I don’t think we’ll have a timeline on that. I think whenever you put timelines on things, you’re hamstringing yourself into a decision maybe you’re not ready for and/or don’t make the right one. We’re gonna make the decision when the decision has to be made. But super excited about the room. We have five guys right now in that room that are gonna have opportunity to vie for that starting job. Just excited to see how it goes. We’re taking one day at a time. Everything’s an evaluation from meetings to practice, how they carry themselves in the weight room, how they get along with the team to completion percentage to decision making. Constantly evaluating that. We’ve got a lot of talent in there. It’s my job to get the best out of them.”
Michigan Wolverines: Interesting Nuggets
While Campbell was non-committal, he gave some interesting nuggets. He was asked if there was a target completion percentage for a quarterback. The standard for the Michigan Wolverines has always been a 67% completion percentage. This isn’t changing in 2024. That is a high percentage and will likely weed out any player dealing with accuracy issues.
The depth chart going into the spring will be from oldest to youngest. This doesn’t mean the older ones are the favorites to land the job, but they will have the inside track initially. The situation is fluid and will change from day to day. Whoever starts for the Michigan Wolverines will have big shoes to fill. However, the pressure of winning a national championship isn’t there. In 2024, the team is playing with house money.
