Former LSU Tiger National Champion Retires at 25 Years Old

Thaddeus Moss is hanging up his cleats after four years as a professional football player and calling it a career. Moss, who was widely recognized as the son of Hall of Famer Randy Moss, entered the 2020 NFL Draft after winning the National Championship with LSU three months prior.

Though Moss struggled to find his footing as a professional, the legacy pass-catcher made a name for himself as the starting tight end for Heisman trophy winner Joe Burrow at LSU. Moss was often overshadowed by collegiate teammates Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson but was a key part of the Tigers’ National Championship win, catching two touchdowns in the title game.

Before joining LSU in 2017, Moss spent his freshman year at NC State before transferring during the summer after his first year.

Having bounced around the scene for several years attempting to continue his professional football career, Thaddeus Moss has decided his athletic days are now in the past. With a May 13 tweet, Moss acknowledged that he is satisfied with his accomplishments.

“It is always important to know when something has reached its end,” Moss tweeted. “Closing circles, shutting doors, finishing chapters, it doesn’t matter what we call it; what matters is to leave in the past those moments in life that are over. Thank You. #Retired.”

Moss spent one season with LSU after transferring from NC State, accumulating 570 yards on 47 receptions. The 6’2″ tight end finished fourth on the team in receiving yards, behind Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, and Terrace Marshall Jr.

In total, Moss played only two full seasons of college football. The star appeared in five games during his freshman season with NC State before sitting out the following year due to the NCAA transfer rules in place before implementing the infamous transfer portal.

Moss would then sit out the following year due to injury, missing two full seasons between his transition to LSU. After the Tigers claimed the 2020 National Championship, Moss decided to forgo his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft.

Thaddeus Moss would go undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft but land with the Washington Football Team — now known as the Washington Commanders — as an undrafted free agent. However, Moss would spend the entire season on injured reserve and be waived the following offseason.

Moss would be claimed by the Cincinnati Bengals shortly after being waived by Washington, reuniting him with Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase. Unfortunately, Moss would spend the majority of his Bengals tenure on the practice squad and be waived again the following summer. He never appeared in an NFL game.

In early 2023, Moss attempted to re-ignite his career in the USFL with the Birmingham Stallions. After one season, Moss was again let go by the team and did not stay with the league after their rebranding to the UFL.

In the final chapter of his professional career, Moss traveled north to try out with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. He was released in training camp and subsequently announced his retirement.
