The Michigan Wolverines have had one of the most interesting offseasons in college football. They are coming off an undefeated national championship season and now enter a new era. Sherrone Moore has taken over after Jim Harbaugh left for the Los Angeles Chargers. He did a great job at retaining the current players and recruits. Moore also brought in many great positional coaches. One of them, new defensive line coach Greg Scruggs, found himself in hot water early Saturday morning.

Chris Page, strategic communications manager for the Ann Arbor Police Department, confirmed that Scruggs had been arrested. “I can confirm he was arrested for OWI by our department just before 3 a.m.” This isn’t the first time Scruggs has had an issue with the law. While he was a senior at the University of Louisville in 2011, he was arrested for a DUI and was dismissed from the team.
A police report is not available at this time, so details are limited. However, an OWI can include the following punishments: 93 days in jail, a $100-500 fine, and up to six months suspension of a driver’s license. None of those are guaranteed, but they are possible depending on the severity of the offense.
How Does This Affect The Michigan Wolverines?
It likely doesn’t affect the team. The Michigan Wolverines have not commented on the situation, but we’ve seen positional coaches keep their jobs even with these types of offenses on their record. More than likely, Greg Scruggs will have to pay some sort of fine along with other punishments.
This will be a situation to watch. If the Michigan Wolverines do decide to move on, they will need to find another defensive line coach quickly. Spring games are coming up, and teams want to get their players familiar with their new coaches.
