The UFL season is almost here! Now that the NFL season has officially ended, many football fans are focusing on spring football. The Birmingham Stallions are ready to try for their third straight championship. They won the USFL the past two years and now will look to have similar success with the merged league. The Stallions got some depth at the quarterback position, signing former All-SEC quarterback Matt Corral to a deal.
Birmingham Stallions Sign QB Matt Corral
Matt Corral is best known for his time at Ole Miss. During his three seasons with the Rebels, he had 8,281 yards passing and 57 touchdowns with 23 interceptions. He was no slouch on the ground, racking up 1,338 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns. During his final year in college, he led the Rebels to a 10-3 record and was named to the All-SEC team.
The Carolina Panthers selected him in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, he suffered a Lisfranc injury in the preseason and was out the whole year. The Panthers released him, and he joined the Patriots. He failed to show up to the team facilities for two straight days, which caused New England to move on.
What Does Matt Corral Bring To The Birmingham Stallions?
For the Birmingham Stallions, Corral brings a ton of upside. In college, he was known for his big arm. On short and intermediate throws, he could fit the ball into tight windows. When the pocket collapses, he keeps his eyes downfield and makes plays with his legs.
His size fools some people. He is incredibly athletic and can make defenders miss in the open field. Over the past few years, mobile quarterbacks have proven to be valuable. Corral brings an elite arm talent paired with athletic playmaking upside.
Career Resurrection?
We saw it with some players last year. A couple of quarterbacks had successful seasons that landed them on an NFL roster. Matt Corral didn’t have issues on the field. His problems seemed to be off-the-field related. If he can have a huge season for the Birmingham Stallions, an NFL team might give him a look during training camp.
The UFL season is set to be the most popular spring football season ever. The merging of the XFL and USFL will hopefully bring new popularity to the sport.
