The Detroit Lions had their most successful season ever in 2023. They were close to making their first-ever Super Bowl appearance but couldn’t topple the San Francisco 49ers. Still, there is a lot of optimism in Detroit. Head coach Dan Campbell has gotten his players to buy in, and GM Brad Holmes has been nailing the draft and signings. Ownership is impressed and has extended both of them through 2027.

This has to make Detroit Lions fans happy. After years of firing incompetent head coaches and GMs, the team finally has leadership they are excited about. Owner Sheila Hamp had this to say in a statement about the extensions.
“We are thrilled to have Brad and Dan under contract for the next four seasons. They have been the driving force behind the rebuild of our football team and the success that we have enjoyed. The continuity they provide for our football program will continue to be the key to our future success on the field.”
Holmes and Campbell were hired within a week of each other, and the team’s response has been positive. Even though the first couple of seasons were losing years, something was different. The culture was different, and the play on the field reflected that. Brad Holmes won PFWA NFL Executive of the Year, and Dan Campbell was a Coach of the Year finalist.
Can The Detroit Lions Sustain Success?
There are some questions the Detroit Lions will have to answer in 2024. Jared Goff has been great for the team but has a history of inconsistency. Sam LaPorta and Amon-Ra St. Brown are elite pass-catchers, but things are thin behind them. Defensively, the secondary has massive questions after C.J. Gardner-Johnson signed with the Eagles. Their pass rush could also use another piece or two.
The good news is that Brad Holmes has shown an ability to draft well. If the Detroit Lions can nail another draft in 2024, they will be on the fast track to success. This franchise has been littered with bad front-office decisions. It is refreshing to see them extend a head coach and GM instead of getting rid of them.
