The NFL salary cap naturally rises every year, and the Detroit Lions are currently ranked eighth in the league in cap space. They will have the means to make a splash in free agency this offseason. There will then be approximately $57 million in extra cap space available to the Lions in 2024.
The Detroit Lions Plans for 2024 Free Agency
The Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes will have quite a bit of salary cap space at his disposal again. This is just about equal to just under $50 million in effective cap space. As the free agency is set to open in a little over two weeks, the Lions will then have plenty of money to spend on free agents. Detroit has 19 unrestricted free agents who are set to hit the market in March. Although the Detroit Lions have additional cap space, it would still be very surprising if they were to spend huge dollars in free agency on external players. It would be best for the team, however, to add a free agent who can address their pressing needs. The salary cap increase allows the Lions to be more flexible regarding contracts.
The Detroit Lions Keeping the Young Guns Running
Holmes has the flexibility to keep the team largely intact if he wants to keep the direction the organization is heading towards. In addition to his end-of-season press conference, he hinted at the organization’s commitment to keeping its young talent. An essential element to finally consider is that the Detroit Lions have several young players who are currently eligible for extensions. Moreover, the contract extensions are also taking effect at the beginning of the 2024 offseason. Signing those young players to long-term contracts is now ultimately Holmes’ goal for the immediate future.
Detroit Lions 2024 Cap Commitments
The Detroit Lions were already in nice shape as far as cap space. The Lions currently have a little over $171 million already in cap commitments to their players for 2024. Performance escalators will also likely increase the Detroit Lions’ cap commitments for some players. They also have another $23 million in dead cap money. Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Penei Sewell, and Alim McNeill are among those who are eligible for new deals. Furthermore, these players now have a call for contract extensions for the first time this offseason. Jared Goff, the Detroit Lions’ quarterback, should finally sign a long-term contract. As of now, the organization presently has 45 players on its roster.
