The Pittsburgh quarterback stays in Pennslyvania, continuing football in the same state where he played in college as well at Pitt. The Philadelphia Eagles acquired the former Steelers quarterback in a massive trade. The former starter for Pittsburgh is now involved in a pick swap that involves the Eagles giving up their third-rounder and two seventh-round picks. This also includes the Steelers giving up their fourth-rounder while Philadelphia gets a young, cost-controlled backup, according to Spotrac. This paves the way for the Steelers’ recent veteran free agent signing to be the starter in Pittsburgh for 2024.

Many quarterbacks drafted in recent seasons, like Mac Jones, Sam Howell, and Desmond Ridder, have been dealt to new teams this offseason. Kenny Pickett is the next former starter moved, as the 2022 first rounder was drafted 20th overall by the Steelers.
Now, as the backup for the Philadelphia Eagles to Jalen Hurts, Pickett will be given a new chance with a different team. Pittsburgh signed Russell Wilson in free agency after he was released by the Denver Broncos, despite his massive contract. With Mason Rudolph (Titans) and Mitch Trubisky (Bills) also signing with new teams, there is an opening for a quarterback behind or to compete with Wilson.
Kenny Pickett Career Summary
The 25-year-old failed to finish this past year and dealt with injuries the season before as well. Pickett has only started 12 games the last two seasons and just didn’t seem like the guy in Pittsburgh after the last two years.
For the Steelers, Pickett finished with a 14-10 record and has 4,474 career passing yards for Pittsburgh. With 13 passing touchdowns to the same amount of interceptions, his NFL career has been rocky so far.
Pickett finished this past season with 2,070 passing yards, six passing touchdowns, and four interceptions with a QBR of 38.1. If he gets another chance to play, the former Pitt quarterback will have to limit the turnovers. At 6’3″ and 220 pounds, he is a dual threat, rushing for four touchdowns with six career fumbles.
The Eagles lost Marcus Mariota in free agency to the Washington Commanders, so Pickett’s competition would be Tanner McKee. Wilson will likely be the new starter in Pittsburgh, although drafting a quarterback could be a possibility. There is still an opening behind him for the backup job, with nobody on the roster. Pickett is locked in with the Philadelphia Eagles for at least the next two seasons.
