Jones was drafted 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama. Jones’ final year in college was one of the best in history as he finished third in Heisman Trophy voting. He also led the Crimson Tide to the 2021 College Football National Championship.
The Alabama product was drafted to be a franchise quarterback in New England, and his tenure got off to a strong start. Jones led New England to the NFL Playoffs and made the Pro Bowl in his rookie year. However, the next two years (2022 and 2023) led to his being considered a bust and being shipped out just three years into his NFL career.
The new regime in New England, led by Head Coach Jerod Mayo, believes Jones’ time in New England is done, and both sides should move on.
Jones finished his career with the New England Patriots with 46 passing touchdowns and 36 interceptions.
What To Expect From Mac Jones In Jacksonville
This will be a homecoming of sorts for the beleaguered quarterback as he played high school football at The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida. Jones will back up Jacksonville Jaguars Quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Following in the footsteps of quarterbacks like Geno Smith, Jones will look to revitalize his career in Duval County. Smith backed up Russell Wilson for years in Seattle before eventually getting the starting job. The list of quarterbacks forced to head to the bench is endless. Jones hopes he will be able to be a starting quarterback in the National Football League again.
A trade for Jones is exactly what he needed. His tenure in New England was not a successful one, but the Jones story in the NFL is far from over.
