The UFL season is fast approaching! On Monday, the league held the final phase of their dispersal draft, where teams could add any available player who played in the league last year. This is the final step in the XFL-USFL merger before the season begins. Here are the results for the San Antonio Brahmas dispersal draft.
San Antonio Brahmas Dispersal Draft Results
The San Antonio Brahmas selected ten players in the dispersal draft on Monday, January 15th.
- QB Quinten Dormady
- DT Trey Botts
- OT B.J. Wilson
- DB Chris Steele
- OT Dareuan Parker
- WR K.D. Cannon
- WR Landen Akers
- S A.J. Hendy
- OT John Yarbrough
- WR Cody Chrest
The Brahmas are going through a coaching change as Hines Ward decided not to return. Long-time NFL coach Wade Phillips will take over the team in his place. The San Antonio Brahmas focused on offense in the dispersal draft, especially at the wide receiver position.
San Antonio Brahmas Dispersal Draft Analysis
The Brahmas struggled last season partly due to a rotating cast at the quarterback position. They are attempting to find their long-term starter and added Quinten Dormady to compete for the job. Overall, the Brahmas focused on a couple of positions. The offensive line was one of them, and they may have gotten a steal in John Yarbrough, who started for the Houston Roughnecks last season. The team stockpiled wide receivers in the later rounds, hoping to find a quality player.
Player To Know: KD Cannon
The former Orlando Guardians wide receiver is a fun player to watch. He only appeared in four games last season but made his mark. He only had four receptions for 161 yards, but two were for touchdowns. Getting a player with a knack for finding the endzone is always a plus for a team. His longest reception was 69 yards, meaning he could also take the top off a defense.
Players like Cannon are always intriguing. There are a lot of talented wide receivers, and too often, good ones get overlooked. Cannon could take the league by storm if he can get a full season. He may not be a WR1, but his skills allow him to be a great gadget player for the team.
Player To Know: Landen Akers
I wanted to highlight another receiver the San Antonio Brahmas got in the dispersal draft, Landen Akers. He was with the team last year and had a solid season. Akers caught 31 passes for 303 yards in six games played. While he didn’t find the endzone, he could be counted on for about 50 yards per game. Every team needs this type of receiver, and his familiarity with the franchise will help him in training camp.
The wide receiver room is crowded. They added Kade Warner, son of Kurt Warner, in the second phase of the draft. This was on top of all the receivers they protected in phase one. There will be fierce competition in training camp for the starting spots on the depth chart.
2024 Outlook
Hines Ward looked in over his head last year as the coach. I have no facts to back this up, but in watching the games, he never seemed to be in control of the situation. This won’t happen with Wade Phillips. He has coached at the highest level and won’t be phased on the sidelines. The San Antonio Brahmas took a lot of flyers in the dispersal draft. Teams have a good month to evaluate before the season kicks off in late March/early April. This team is looking to bounce back from a rough 2023. Can they find their footing in the new UFL?
