The Philadelphia Eagles had one of the worst collapses in 2023. After starting 10-1, the defense fell apart, and the offense struggled. This offseason, the Eagles have made a point to solidify the defensive side of the ball. They are bringing back one of their bright spots from the past few seasons. Safety Reed Blankenship has signed a one-year contract extension to stay with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Reed Blankenship will be with the Philadelphia Eagles through the 2025 season. He earned it after his 2023 season. Blankenship had a team-high 108 tackles and played 81% of the defensive snaps. On top of the tackles, he had 11 passes defended, three interceptions, and one fumble recovery. This makes him only one of five players last season to have 105-plus tackles, 3-plus interceptions, and 10-plus passes defended.
While the rest of the defense struggled at times, Reed Blankenship was productive at his position. The Philadelphia Eagles brought in some depth at the position, bringing back CJ Gardner-Johnson on a three-year deal. Blankenship should have the other spot, making this duo formidable for NFL offenses.
Philadelphia Eagles: Can They Improve On Defense?
Getting rid of Matt Patricia was the first step. However, the players have to play better on the field. There is no questioning the talent this team has on that side of the ball, but they couldn’t stop any offense in the last third of the season. GM Howie Roseman shifted some pieces on the defensive line to try and get more pressure on the quarterback. Overall, it will be hard to do worse than the end of last season.
The Philadelphia Eagles are a mystery heading into 2024. Will they be the team we saw in 2022 and the first half of 2023? If so, they should be in the conversation for the NFC Champs. However, if the issues from 2024 linger, this season could go wrong very quickly.
