The UConn Huskies have had great success on the basketball court. This goes for both men’s and women’s basketball for UConn in the last three decades. On the lady’s side of the game, head coach Geno Auriemma has kept the Huskies in the national title race for quite some time, most recently in 2016.
Dan Hurley and the UConn Huskies beat the Purdue Boilermakers in the national championship game on Monday night in Glendale, Arizona. As of last night, it gives the UConn men’s team their second title in the last two years. There have been two occasions when both programs have won national championships in the same season, but it has only happened twice. The last time was in 2014 when each side brought home a trophy.
UConn Huskies Championship Run
"For the last 30 years, UConn's been running college basketball." — Dan Hurley

According to Dan Hurley the UConn Huskies have been “running” college basketball for the last 30 years. This statement is not far-fetched considering that the men just beat Zach Edey and the Purdue Boilermakers last night by a score of 75-60. Their run continued from last season after capturing the crown in 2023. It is evident that proper coaching and standards have been set on both sides.
Players know what their head coaches expect during the offseason, in practice, and when games tip off in the regular season. The women were not able to reach the national title game with Paige Bueckers after losing to Iowa and Caitlin Clark in the Final Four. Each season brings in different athletes, but Geno Auriemma is no stranger to the big stage in March for the women’s UConn Huskies. The ladies’ program has won 11 titles, compared to only six for the men’s side of basketball. The Huskies men went on a 10-year drought before winning it all last season. Now, there is no fear in Dan Hurley since reaching and winning back-to-back title games.
Huskies Retaining Dan Hurley
UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley was a candidate to take the job at Kentucky. After his national title win on Monday night, he is committed to staying with the UConn Huskies for a lot longer. The money is a big portion of the job, but developing the young men is ideally his reason for staying. Considering that he has won national championships in two straight seasons, he sees the growth in his program.
For UConn Huskies fans, they will be glad to know that they are getting Hurley back for next season. It is a fact, Dan Hurley will be chasing a third straight national title in 2025. Heading into another year for each program is normal, which is the same for every collegiate basketball team on either side. But, the truth of the matter is that the UConn Huskies are not stopping their grind for more championships as time moves on!
