The Miami Dolphins have been making coaching changes during this offseason. They started by hiring their new defensive coordinator, Anthony Weaver. He coached the Baltimore Ravens defensive line and was the assistant head coach for three seasons under John Harbaugh. As of Tuesday, the Miami Dolphins have hired Joe Barry as their new linebackers coach/run game coordinator.
Miami Dolphins Hire Joe Barry As New Linebackers Coach/Run Game Coordinator
Joe Barry had a history on the defensive side of the ball. Most recently, with the Green Bay Packers. He was the Green Bay defensive coordinator from 2021-2023. His defense was ranked 28th in the league against the run in 2023.
Many Packers fans did not want Joe Barry to keep his role after the 2022 season, but Matt Lafleur chose to retain him for last season. His defense did pick up as 2023 ended, but the Packers could not get any farther than the NFC Divisional Game against the 49ers. Barry could turn out better with two positions than coaching an entire defensive unit like he did in the past.
Miami Dolphins Stats In 2023
The Miami Dolphins ranked sixth in the National Football League in rushing for 2023. They fell just short of the AFC Divisional Round with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wildcard Round of the playoffs. Overall, the team ranked number one on offense and in the top ten on the defensive side. Specifically, the Dolphins ended the season ranked 15th in the league against the pass.
Miami had a good season in 2023. Despite the downfall when they reached the playoffs, the Miami Dolphins held an 11-6 record. The team will be trying to build on what they accomplished in 2023. This includes the coaching changes coming into the new season.
Coaching Changes For 2024
So far, the biggest notable coaching change has been Anthony Weaver. He has experience with the Baltimore Ravens, who were highly successful on defense in 2023. A huge question for Joe Barry is if the linebackers can step up to stop the run. Weaver will do his best to prepare his guys weekly for every opponent. If the Miami Dolphins can build on their 2023 season, a Super Bowl appearance will be more reachable in the near future.
