Two former major champions are tied atop the leaderboard after the third round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Shane Lowry, 2019 Open Champion, and 2022 Masters Champion Scottie Scheffler are -9 after three rounds at Bay Hill. Scheffler is also World No. 1. Both Lowry and Scheffler fired a two-under 70 on Saturday to put themselves in the final group tomorrow.
Just one shot back of the leaders is reigning US Open champion Wyndham Clark at -8. Will Zalatoris, looking for his second career win on Sunday, joins a logjam at -7 that includes 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama.
Unpacking Saturday At The Arnold Palmer Invitational
Zalatoris was firmly in control through the front nine on Saturday until his third round went slightly awry. A five-shot lead turned to a one-shot deficit for Zalatoris following a double bogey six on hole 14 and a hot start to the back nine for Clark. A bogey on 18 for Clark left him one shot back heading into Sunday.
Most of the players near the top of the leaderboard made a charge on the back nine to put themselves in position heading into the final round. Scheffler shot four-under on the back nine while both Clark and Lowry shot three-under on the inward nine.
Zalatoris went the wrong direction and shot a 3-over par 39 on the inward nine thanks to two double bogeys.
Who Else Is In Striking Distance of Scottie Scheffler and Shane Lowry At Bay Hill
Russell Henley heads into the final round two shots back and just four shots back of Scheffler and Lowry is four-time major champion Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy shot a Saturday-best 68 to send himself shooting up the leaderboard.
What Will Happen On Sunday At Bay Hill?
There are storylines galore heading into what should be a great final round. Scheffler has been playing the best of any player this season but has been winless due to putting woes. Zalatoris is regaining his form from years past following back surgery that sidelined him all of last year.
Many of the biggest names in golf will make a charge on Sunday in the hope they can become a winner at one of the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour.
Who Wins the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational? Will It Be Scottie Scheffler or Someone Else?
Scheffler has proven that when given an opportunity to win on Sunday, he will usually come through. That will be the case on Sunday. He has been knocking on the door this season, and tomorrow he will kick it down. For the second time, the first being in 2021, Scheffler will win the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
