The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the process of remaking their offense. They signed Russell Wilson and traded for Justin Fields. This week, they have signed some fringe players who can help fill out the roster. New offensive coordinator Arthur Smith will have a familiar face to work with next season. The Pittsburgh Steelers signed running back Cordarrelle Patterson to a two-year deal on Tuesday.

Cordarrelle Patterson will enter his 12th NFL season as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Minnesota Vikings drafted him in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Patterson struggled as a wide receiver but was an elite kick returner. He has made first-team All-Pro four times and second-team All-Pro two times in his career as a returner. The Falcons were the first team to unlock his potential at the running back position.
In the 2021 and 2022 seasons, Cordarrelle Patterson rushed for over 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns. His versatility and speed made him a dangerous weapon on the Falcons offense. However, he fell out of favor once Tyler Allgeier and Bijan Robinson joined the fold. He decided to follow former head coach Arthur Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Pittsburgh Steelers Special Teams Weapon?
The NFL owners voted to change the kickoff rules. Under the new format, returners get more room to operate and more opportunities for returns. Cordarrelle Patterson must be licking his chops. While it may take some getting used to, players like Patterson could thrive under the new rules. This may have been the reason the Pittsburgh Steelers jumped on him soon after everything was approved.
If nothing else, the Pittsburgh Steelers get another backfield piece behind Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren. Injuries happen, and we know Arthur Smith likes to do the unexpected. It is another offensive weapon for a team that is looking to improve from last season’s struggles.
