Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton spoke to the media yesterday, hinting more and more at Russell Wilson being released. He said that a decision will most definitely come within the next two weeks, and he continued to touch on the rookie quarterback class.
The combine begins tomorrow afternoon, with teams conducting meetings with players yesterday and today. Payton will also be meeting with ownership next week to discuss Wilson’s future with the team.
As more reports came out as to whom the Broncos were meeting with, the names of quarterbacks started to flood in quickly
Denver Broncos: First Meeting with JJ McCarthy
JJ McCarthy to the Denver Broncos has been quickly picking up steam throughout the week heading into the combine. He fits the mold of what Sean Payton wants in his next franchise quarterback and has all the tools to be an elite player in the NFL.
The main concern with him is if he can consistently make plays without being too dependent on his teammates. We’ve seen this past season how reliant the offense was on running back Blake Corum, especially McCarthy. As far as his career at Michigan, he went 27-1, winning 2 Big-Ten Championships, and a National Championship in 2023.
It will come down to whether or not Sean Payton believes he can design his offense around McCarthy, and develop him into the franchise QB.
Denver Broncos: Meeting with Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr.
Today Denver will meet with Oregon and Washington QBs Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. These two are considered to be more NFL-ready than JJ McCarthy. The main reason being their usage in the offense, having a significant workload.
Bo Nix has played in pro-style offenses in his time with Oregon, similar to what Payton likes to run. He has a strong arm, good pocket awareness, and showed he’s not afraid to show up in big moments.
For Penix, he has one of the strongest arms we’ve seen coming out of the draft. Sometimes it hurts him because he’ll overshoot his targets, but his potential is unmatched. The question is if he can adjust to an offense where more crossing routes and short passes are featured rather than the deep ball.
As the Draft gets closer, we will get a more in-depth look at how each quarterback performs, and who Denver could be leaning toward selecting.
