Just eight days until the MLB regular season begins, and the reigning AL Cy Young award winner is still a free agent. Blake Snell is rumored to be headed to several teams, including the Yankees, Angels, Dodgers, Giants, and even a few others. It’s believed he wants to stay on the west coast. That limits his options, as does his desire for a $200 million deal reported by MLB.com. USA Today‘s Bob Nightengale reports many in the league now believe he’s looking closely at Anaheim or San Francisco. Snell won his second Cy Young after going 14-9 with a 2.25 ERA and 234 strikeouts in 2023.
Yankees in the Mix after Cole’s Injury?
The Yankee rumors are boiling as the bombers wait for results from Gerrit Cole’s MRI. The team said he had issues bouncing back from his last start. “He described it as his recovery, leading into his next start, has been more akin to what he feels in the season when he’s making 100 pitches,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday. “He usually doesn’t have the recovery issues he’s having. It’s been more of a challenge, more taxing… I think there’s a level of discomfort, but I wouldn’t describe it as he’s in pain,” The AL Cy Young winner is in the fifth season of a $324 million deal; he has an opt-out after this year.
Snell’s Social Media Messages
Blake Snell is very active on social media. His Instagram is a lot of fun. This post has a lot of us scratching our heads. He posted this image over the weekend. Your guess is as good as mine. But it’s got a lot of Angel fans excited. I think we can excuse Snell for not being completely dialed in. His girlfriend is expecting the couple’s first child. Blake was also busy coaching a little league team in the offseason in his hometown of Seattle.
It’s Not Just Snell
It’s not often there’s a big, durable left-hander who is still a free agent this late in the spring. But Jordan Montgomery is still waiting by the phone. The Boston Red Sox are reportedly interested after losing Lucas Giolito. Montgomery popped the champagne with the Texas Rangers last year. He made 32 starts in each of the last two years and pitched 200+ innings for the first time in his career last season. He ended the year as the number two starter for the champs. Montgomery isn’t the only one who is still a free agent: JD Martinez and Brandon Belt are still out there.
