The Washington Commanders organization has gone under a complete makeover. They have a new owner, a new coaching staff, and, most likely, a new quarterback. The team was not shy about spending money in free agency as they signed the most players in the league. What positions do they need to focus on for the NFL Draft?
Washington Commanders NFL Draft Needs
The Washington Commanders have a great collection of draft picks. In total, they currently have nine, but it is where those picks are that matters. They have six picks in the top 100. Obviously, they have the second overall pick, which will be spent on a quarterback. In the second round, they have numbers 36 and 40, thanks to the Montez Sweat trade. Then, they acquired two more via trade. The team obviously needs a quarterback but what other positions do they need?
Edge Rusher
The Washington Commanders traded away Chase Young and Sweat before the trade deadline last season. While this was the right move, it does leave them with a void in the position. It is hard to win in the NFL without putting pressure on the opposing quarterback. The edge rusher class is thin, but there are some quality mid-round pieces the Commanders could target.
Offensive Tackle
The challenge with taking a young quarterback on a bad team is the offensive line isn’t good. It doesn’t matter how good the player is under center if the protection isn’t there. While drafting a quarterback with the second overall pick is the right thing to do, the Washington Commanders should look to nab a tackle with one of their second-round picks. With the depth of this tackle class, they will likely get a solid starter.
Cornerback
Last season, the Washington Commanders took Emmanuel Forbes with the 16th overall pick. The knock on him was his size. Analysts wondered whether he would be pushed around too much in the league. That looked to be the case during his rookie season. Teams picked on him, and he was benched at one point. While it hurts to have to take a position in back-to-back drafts, the Commanders need a solid cornerback.
The Washington Commanders can infuse some young talent into this roster thanks to the number of picks they have. We will get a first look at the new regime and the decisions they make when the NFL Draft takes center stage in a couple of weeks.
