Iyo Sky defeats Asuka at WWE Backlash 2026

Iyo Sky vs. Asuka was the only women’s match on the 2026 WWE Backlash card, and they delivered. There is a lot of stories that went into this match, but ultimately, the in-ring itself was on fire. Let’s take a closer look at what happened and what it means going forward.

Iyo Sky defeats Asuka in an outstanding match

The match between Iyo Sky and Asuka at Backlash was exactly what you would expect heading into the match. There was a loud, “We want Kairi” chants at the beginning of the match, but the two women were able to put on an absolute banger of a match at the end of the day. They were able to step up and completely tear the house down as Iyo Sky was able to wind up victorious.

The big turning point in the match was outside of the ring on top of the announce table. Asuka attempted to spit the mist into Iyo’s eyes, but Iyo used commentator Wade Barrett’s notebook to avoid the mist entirely. The match continued and eventually went to that next level as a whole. Sky would eventually win the match and after the match was intriguing.

Despite the fact that there was some rivalry heading into the match, Iyo Sky would bow to Asuka and the two would embrace. After this match, this could lead to a match with Becky Lynch for the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship. Asuka’s future is a bit more intriguing though as it seemed as she was taking a step away.

However, that is not official and could just be going after Kairi Sane’s departure from WWE as well as wrestling her former mentee. This is something that felt like it was a dream match and something that was able to mean a lot for the two wrestlers in the ring. This was a fun return to action as a pallet cleanser for Backlash. It will be intriguing to see exactly what this means going forward for Asuka.
