The Chicago Cubs had the tying run at the plate with two outs in the ninth inning when Ian Happ struck out ending the game losing 4-1 to the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was another cold day at Wrigley Field, the game-time temperature was 50 degrees, and the wind was blowing in.
In the bottom of the ninth Dansby Swanson singled and Michael Busch doubled. Swanson would score the Cubs’ only run on a Miles Mastrobuoni groundout.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Yamamoto Gets First Major League Win
Yoshinobu Yamamoto got his first major league win for the Los Angeles Dodgers. His performance was ‘precarious‘. He worked out of bases-loaded jams in the first and the third without giving up any runs.
He ended the day throwing five shutout innings with eight strikeouts and giving up just three hits. Dodgers closer Evan Phillips gave up the run in the ninth but got the save. Dodger pitchers had 15 strikeouts today.
Ohtani has Another Productive Day for the Los Angeles Dodgers
The game was scoreless until the 6th inning. Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy hit a hanging breaking ball off the right field wall, Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernandez would come around to score giving the Dodgers a 3-0 lead. Ohtani was on base three times today.
The Dodgers got another run in the eighth. Left-fielder Chris Taylor reached on an error and scored on a Miguel Rojas single to make it 4-0 Dodgers. Dodgers number two catcher Austin Barnes was two for four giving starter Will Smith the day off. Smith leads major league baseball with a .459 batting average.
The rubber game is tomorrow on the north side at 2:20 p.m. ET. Gavin Stone (0-0, 5.40 ERA) goes for the Los Angeles Dodgers against rookie Shota Imanaga (1-0, 0.00 ERA) for the Cubs. Imanaga took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in his MLB debut last week against the Rockies.
