San Antonio Spurs cornerstone rookie Victor Wembanyama is a lock for Rookie of the Year. Wembanyama won’t play in the final game of the season tomorrow. He’ll finish with averages of 21.4 PPG, 10.6 RPG, and 3.6 BPG in 71 games. Considering how the team has looked in the last ten games (6-4), coach Gregg Popovich has to like the future of this team. Wemby is as good as advertised. The goal in the offseason will be to surround this young talent with enough pieces to be competitive in the Wild West.
San Antonio Spurs Center Is Breaking Records
According to ClutchPoints, San Antonio Spurs Center Victor Wembanyama is the first player in NBA history to record 1500+ points, 250+ blocks, and 100+ three-pointers made. To put this into perspective, he is the perfect center for today’s NBA. He can be a stretch five on offense and a force on the defensive end. He has the handles of a point guard and a low post presence. To find one player who can do these things in today’s NBA is a game changer.
Earlier this season, Wemby became the third teenager, since blocks were tracked, to record 35 points, ten-plus rebounds, and two-plus blocks in a game, joining LeBron James and Kevin Durant. The James comparison comes up a lot because they were prodigies before even stepping into the league as teenagers. The Durant comparison comes up due to his ability to shoot and handle at his height. Funnily enough, Durant was Wemby’s favorite player growing up.
Predictions About San Antonio Spurs Offseason
Some believe that Gregg Popovich has lost his fastball. That isn’t the case. I fervently believe that this can be the beginning of the San Antonio Spurs resurgence. With a top-four draft pick likely for next year’s draft, I expect the Spurs to look at Kentucky guards Rob Dillingham or Reed Sheppard. If there’s anything we’ve learned about Kentucky Basketball, it’s that their guards translate to the league. Tre Jones has played admirably at the point, but they need a point guard who can be a consistent offensive threat.

Victor Wembanyama will play for France in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. On the world’s stage, it wouldn’t surprise me if some veterans decide this is someone they can win with. Some vital free agents to watch may be thinking about a match: Klay Thompson and Gordon Hayward. Klay Thompson would consider it if the money is right. He has all the championships and experience to help a young team like the Spurs. I included Gordon Hayward with the caveat that he wasn’t trying to latch on to a contender. Honorable mention: if the Hawks decide the Trae Young and Dejounte Murray pairing doesn’t work for them, the San Antonio Spurs should consider getting Murray back if the price is right.
