The San Antonio Spurs may have the worst record in the Western Conference, but they have something else that’s even better. Hope. After a couple of losing seasons, they appear to be on the right way up. Even when they lose, their losses are at least more entertaining. Although they’ll still fall victim to lopsided defeats, they happen less frequently. Of course, an issue remains. Every time their generational talent leaves the floor, the team seemingly forgets basketball fundamentals.
However, fans of the Texas team are being patient for now. It has been a long process, but the light appears at the end of the tunnel. Following last night’s win, do you see them contending for a title any time soon?
San Antonio Spurs Rookie Sensation
The word “sensation” is thrown around too much. Pretty soon being exceptional will be considered the new normal, if not already. However, in this case, the usage of the term is completely appropriate. Just look at how he entered the building against the Toronto Raptors! Everyone knew he would make a statement. Of course, San Antonio Spurs fans know that he promised to do so every game. But little did the NBA community know that it would be both physically and metaphorically.

However, he has delivered. Not only did Victor Wembanyama get a triple-double, but he fittingly did so in a unique way. He finished the night with 27 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists and 10 blocks. Even as a first-year player in the league and with the San Antonio Spurs, he keeps finding ways to impress in ways that have not quite been seen in his style before.
San Antonio Spurs Unique Talent
At 7’4, Wemby stands out. But so too does his skill. Despite being lanky and tall he uses his size well to make up for his current lack of weight. Although adding a couple more pounds, or as Dusty puts it, ” a few more ham sandwiches” wouldn’t hurt!

However, he dishes out his fair dosage of physical play. But for now, he uses one of his best physical assets for the San Antonio Spurs, his height. It works! Although he recorded this triple-double through blocks it will happen again. He routinely finds ways to alter to destroy opponent’s shots at the rim. Unfortunately, for casual fans, he remains underappreciated. You can’t allow his great talent to be taken for granted.
San Antonio Spurs Elite Company
Speaking of overused words, elite. But again, elevating his play here is appropriate. He became the first NBA player in three years to have a triple-double through blocks. Additionally, Wemby joins some exclusive clubs.
Only two other players recorded a stat line of over 25 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 10 blocks before last night. The names included David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon. Additionally, the French superstar pulled this feat off as a rookie for the first time since Robinson. Maybe it’s just the Spurs way?
Do things tend to bode well for first-overall picks, remember Tim Duncan? But for now, Coach Gregg Popovich continues to make things clear. Wemby remains on his timeline and will receive no pressure from the organization. He’ll continue to grow and develop, but they don’t view him as the next anything. But for fans watching the San Antonio Spurs, his play continues to dictate having these types of conversations sooner than what his head coach may want.
