The Pittsburgh Steelers continued their streak of winning seasons under Mike Tomlin. However, the winning record hasn’t correlated with playoff success. They tend to be one of the last teams in the playoffs and struggle against a superior opponent in January. The team has transformed their quarterback room and still has an elite defense. What do they need in the NFL Draft?
Pittsburgh Steelers NFL Draft Needs
The Pittsburgh Steelers currently have seven picks in the NFL Draft. Four of them are in the top 100. Historically, the Steelers have drafted well. While every team has their misses (*cough**cough* Kenny Pickett *cough**cough*), overall, this team drafts and develops well. There is one position they need the most help with, and this draft is the perfect one to find players for that position.
Offensive Line
The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a middle-of-the-road offensive line for the past few years. It hasn’t been the worst, but it hasn’t done them any favors. Broderick Jones was a great pick last year, but the team needs someone on the other side. The good news is this is a deep tackle class. They can stick with their late first-round pick and likely get a high-quality offensive lineman.
Cornerback
Here is the list of cornerbacks behind Joey Porter Jr. for the Pittsburgh Steelers: Donte Jackson, Josiah Scott, Cory Trice Jr., Darius Rush, and Luq Barcoo. The Steelers need help at corner. They have an elite defense at every other position. TJ Watt is a walking sack machine. Minkah Fitzpatrick is one of the top safeties in the league. They signed Patrick Queen in free agency to beef up their linebackers. If they can get another solid young cornerback, this team could have an elite defense in 2024.
Wide Receiver
The Pittsburgh Steelers traded Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers in the offseason. George Pickens, Calvin Austin III, and Van Jefferson are currently in the top three on the depth chart. This team needs another reliable receiver. Both Pickens and Austin are speed guys. They can burn a defense deep but aren’t as good in a 3rd and 7 situation. They need a solid possession-type receiver who can be a reliable target for whoever is the quarterback.
The Steelers are always in the mix in the AFC. With a successful NFL Draft, they could make some noise at the conference if Russell Wilson finds his Super Bowl-caliber form.
