The former bantamweight champion Petr Yan may have emerged as the winner at UFC 299, but he didn’t return unscathed. The fight will most likely be out for the rest of 2024 after disclosing his need for surgery following a rupture in his ACL, torn meniscus, and groin injury.
PETR YAN’S PRIOR DEFEAT AND COMEBACK
Yan revealed this on their social media page shortly after his battle against Yadong Song. “ So MRI confirmed ACL rupture, meniscus torn, and groin injury. Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow. Nothing will break me, I’m determined to come back stronger than ever in no time.” He defeated his opponent via unanimous decision and broke his three-fight losing streak. Yan suffered a round of defeat going all the way back to 2022 when he fell to Aljamain Sterling and lost the bantamweight championship. He also lost his other two consecutive fights against Sean O’Malley and Merab Divashhvil before going on a one-year break. Fortunately, he managed an impressive comeback at the UFC 299.
PETR YAN: FUTURE EXPECTATIONS
The injury is a sad occurrence for the Russian fighter who just bagged his first win after three consecutive losses. Fortunately, after his win against Song, he is currently ranked #5 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA junkie bantamweight rankings. Yan has expressed his eagerness to get back in the game and gain momentum in the octagon. Following his UFC 299 victory, he spoke about his willingness to face tough opponents thrown at him. Luckily,, the bantamweight ranking has numerous options lined up so his return holds promises of entertaining bouts.
MEDICAL BREAK TILL FURTHER NOTICE for Petr Yan
Unfortunately, “No Mercy” will have to be sidelined for most part of the remainder of the year due to his injuries. MMA fighters rarely leave the octagon unharmed as they may suffer injuries that will require medical attention. ACL and knee injuries are fatal wounds that may take Yan nine months to one year to recover. Although it is currently unknown if a meniscus tear is in the same knee Yan’s doctor will likely repair the damage done during the same surgery for his ACL. It is unclear how soon he will be back in the cage but the athlete will have to wait the better part of another year till Petr Yan is completely healed up to be ready to compete in his next fight in the octagon.
