Training Camp Day One: Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen Gains Chemistry With New Offense
Day one of Buffalo Bills training camp is in the books. The Buffalo Bills begin their journey in hopes of hoisting their first Lombardi Trophy in 2025.
Buffalo Returns To St. John Fisher University
On Wednesday, the Buffalo Bills held their first practice at St. John Fisher University in Pittsford, New York. The Bills were without four players, including two starters, for the first day of training camp, but the great news is that everybody showed up, including RB James Cook, who was a candidate to hold out due to contract issues.
Head Coach Sean McDermott addressed the media before practice, saying that he was happy to have everyone in attendance but wants to be cautious with players who are battling injuries. The team battled the injury bug throughout the offseason, including organized team activities. DE Joey Bosa and S Cole Bishop missed ample time in OTAs but are fully healthy participants in training camp.
Summary Of Day One: New Receivers Gaining Chemistry With Josh Allen
The Bills ran 11-on-11 drills throughout the first day of camp. The main focus from Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady’s squad was getting the 2024 MVP, Josh Allen, more chemistry with his new receivers. Freshly acquired Wide Receivers Josh Palmer and Elijah Moore were sprinkled into the first-team reps along with Keon Coleman, Curtis Samuel, and Khalil Shakir. The offense spent most of the day working on red zone targets, which gives the 2024 MVP an opportunity to work on ball placement with his new receivers.
The first day of practice was not a good day for Coleman. The Bills’ newly extended No. 1 cornerback, Christian Benford, got the best of Coleman on all five of their reps. Coleman struggled to gain separation from Benford. While it is still very early in training camp, it is something to keep your eyes on as camp continues for the Bills. The former 2024 second-round pick struggled throughout his rookie season to gain separation against cornerbacks who jammed him off the line of scrimmage. Experts anticipate a better showing tomorrow for Coleman.
Rookies Rule Day One Of Training Camp
Rookie Defensive Tackle Deon Walker was a full participant during day one. Walker missed portions of OTAs and mini camp due to a back injury. He was able to pick up an assisted sack along with fellow rookie Defensive Tackle TJ Sanders. The new defensive line had the better day against the banged-up Bills offensive line that was missing two key players.
Speaking of rookies, first-round pick Cornerback Maxwell Hairston made the play of the day on a pass intended for KJ Hamler. He showed off his ability to recover on the play and batted the ball down. Hairston is in a competition with former first-round pick Tre’Davious White for the starting cornerback position opposite of Christian Bedford. Get your popcorn ready for this battle, all training camp.
Final Thoughts
Day two of training camp will begin at 9:45 Eastern Standard Time. The Bills will be without TE Dawson Knox, RT Spencer Brown, C Sedrick Van Prann-Granger, and WR Laviska Shenault; all are expected to miss the second day of practice due to various injuries.
Keep your eyes on a few battles throughout training camp for the Buffalo Bills, including the competition for who will be the backup quarterback to the 2024 MVP. Mike White and Mitch Trubisky will battle for the opportunity to back up Allen in 2025. Buffalo has a difficult decision to make, as they are strapped for cash. The team could save $2.5 million by releasing Trubisky. We will keep you updated throughout the week with news from St. John Fisher University.
