The Kansas City Chiefs are smack dab in the middle of a dynasty run. With three Super Bowl championships in the last five seasons, the Chiefs have gotten a little long in the tooth at some positions. They also have some holes to fill to remain on top of the proverbial heap. With the 2024 NFL Draft quickly approaching, those holes could be filled with a solid draft plan. What are the Kansas City Chiefs roster needs as they head into the NFL Draft?
Kansas City Chiefs NFL Draft Needs
After defeating the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, the Kansas City Chiefs cemented their claim of being a dynasty. However, this offseason, they traded away top cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans after failing to come to a long-term agreement. On the offensive side of the ball, they released Marquez Valdez-Scantling and signed Marquise “Hollywood” Brown. Along with those roster moves, they still have some holes to fill in order to improve their roster.
Wide Receiver
Even with the acquisition of Hollywood Brown, the Chiefs still need substantial upgrades in their wide receiver room. In 2023, Chiefs pass catchers dropped an astounding 2.6 passes per game, the worst in the NFL. With the uncertainty surrounding Rashee Rice, a wide receiver should be a high priority during the NFL Draft. At the end of the first round, Kansas City will have plenty of wide receivers to select from, as it is the deepest position pool in the 2024 NFL Draft. At the 32nd overall selection, options could include two Texas Longhorn wide receivers: Adonai Mitchell and Xavier Worthy. If they decide to go a different direction in the first round and wait for a round to draft a receiver, Keon Coleman, Troy Franklin, and Xavier Legette could be options.
Left Tackle
Last year’s third-round pick Wanye Morris took over at left tackle for the Super Bowl champs, but he is far from consistent. During their Christmas Day battle with the Las Vegas Raiders, Morris allowed 10 quarterback pressures. The Chiefs could look to upgrade the position if they don’t feel like Morris will factor into their long-term plans. Amarius Mims (Georgia), Tyler Guyton (Oklahoma), Jordan Morgan (Arizona), and Kingsley Suamataia (BYU) might be options if they decide to go with a tackle with their first-round pick.
Cornerback
Trading away L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans has left the Chiefs with a gaping hole at the cornerback position. Chamarri Conner, their 2023 fourth-round pick, could possibly take over the role, but there is definite uncertainty there. Cooper DeJean (Iowa), Kool-Aid McKinstry (Alabama), and Ennis Rakestraw (Missouri) could be available at the end of the first round. If they wait until later, TJ Tampa (Iowa State), Andru Phillips (Kentucky), and Mike Sainristil (Michigan) could be good fits.
