New York Yankees Win 8-3 Over Houston Astros As Ryan Weathers Pitched Well
The Yankees won this game against the Houston Astros 8-3. The Yanks’ starting pitcher was Ryan Weathers. It was interesting to see him pitch as he was just on the paternity list. He got in about 5 p.m. yesterday. He pitched well. He was faced by Mike Burrows. He pitched well, too.
The Yankees and Astros are rivals. In 2017, the teams squared off in the American League Championship Series. The Astros won, but afterward it was discovered they were cheating. They had somebody in center field who would steal the pitch signal from the catcher. That person would communicate with someone behind the dugout who would bang on a trash can to signal to the batter what type of pitch was coming. Should the Astros have been stripped of more of their accomplishments from that season?
Yankees and Astros Game Summary
There was not much to the beginning of this game, as both starting pitchers did a good job. Weathers came off the paternity list to pitch 5.1 innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. He surrendered 2 runs and gave up a mammoth home run. He was matched by Burrows.
He was touched for solo home runs by Trent Grisham and Jose Caballero. He left the game after pitching five innings. He struck out eight batters. He pitched well, but was trailing 2-1 in this game when he was removed.
However, Carlos Correa’s home run in the sixth inning took Burrows off the hook by tying the game. Correra scored the first two runs of the game and has hit 19 home runs in 72 games against the Yankees in his career. With that run tying the game at 2, we headed to the last third of the game with the outcome in doubt. The Yankees had an important advantage because of the great pitching performances they have gotten from their starting pitchers lately, and their bullpen is well-rested.
The Yankees got three runs in the top of the seventh inning on bases-loaded walks. However, they were looking for more; they left the bases loaded. However, the Yanks scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth while holding the Astros in check. They go for a third consecutive series sweep and ninth win in a row tomorrow.
Hard To Win
It is hard to win baseball games. There are quite a few that are decided by one run. It is usually the case that one mistake (in the field or by a pitcher) decides the game. So, it is a rare treat when a team wins 12-4 like the Yankees did last night. Most games are close, like the one tonight (which was 2-2 during the sixth inning). That is why every play and every pitch matters in baseball; a mistake is just around the corner. Speaking of hard to win, when a team drops 17 of their first 37 games, they fire their manager.
You Must Win
The Red Sox beat the Orioles 17-1 on Saturday, but fired their manager, Alex Cora. It may seem like odd timing following a big win, but the Red Sox are 10-17. They are in last place in the American League East. They just got swept at home by the rival New York Yankees. They scored only three runs in the home series against the Yankees.
They cannot hit, and several of their pitchers are struggling. So, even though many consider Cora to be the best manager in the American League, Cora is out. You cannot fire the players.
