The Michigan Wolverines have one massive question for the 2024 season: who will play quarterback? JJ McCarthy only lost one game as the stater while in Ann Arbor, but he is off to the NFL. The Wolverines have no shortage of candidates. There are five players who could potentially get the job: graduate Jack Tuttle, senior Davis Warren, juniors Jayden Denegal and Alex Orji, and freshman Jadyn Davis. As the first spring practices are happening, new head coach Sherrone Moore revealed he thinks one player is a “freak athlete.”

Alex Orji has impressed Moore so far. He played a little for the Michigan Wolverines last season in special packages and in garbage time. Moore made it clear he doesn’t just think Orji can run but be an elite passer as well.
“Alex Orji, obviously, a freak athlete. The ability for him to be a game-changer with the ball in his hands, to run the football, is where he really has a different element than the other guys, and we’ve seen it in the past. But it’s not like he can’t throw. He can, and he’s throwing pretty well as we’ve gone through this springtime.”
Many fans and analysts believe Orji was the early leader in the quarterback race. His dual-threat ability makes him a dangerous weapon on the field. We have seen many quarterbacks of his type dominate the college football landscape.
2024 Michigan Wolverines Outlook
The Michigan Wolverines have one of the most difficult schedules in the nation. Their conference adds some elite teams from the Pac-12, Ohio State, and Penn State, which are still around. They also get Texas early in the season during the non-conference schedule. However, this team won’t be a pushover. There is some returning talent, like running back Donovan Edwards, and the coaching staff has many years of coaching experience.
It will be an interesting year for the Michigan Wolverines. The good news is they are playing with house money. They won the national championship last year. All the pressure is off. If they can sustain their success and be in the mix for the College Football Playoff, fans will likely be very happy.
