Iowa Hawkeyes (22-3, 11-2 Big Ten) woke up knowing that history would be made. Although records are made to be broken, this one is quite an accomplishment that may stand for a while. Kelsey Plum managed to score 3,527 points in her college career for the Washington Huskies. Before today this was the most by any basketball player on the women’s side. But one of the most nationally recognized players determined to overcome an all-time scoring hurdle in collegiate sports. The media maintained a watch-out alert that has been on for a couple of games. But game casts require the tracker no longer.
How will this momentous night be remembered in college basketball history?
Iowa Hawkeyes Hold A Significant National Record
She started with 3,527 points, needing only 8 points to break the record. In fact, Peacock devoted an entire cast and viewing experience to only following her. But Caitlin Clark eclipsed the milestone against the Michigan Wolverines on February 15, 2024.
She started with a quick couple of buckets. But the record-breaker happened on a three while playing in semi-transition. Fittingly it happened this way. Everyone knows how good her shooting his, often extending far beyond the Men’s range. The sharpshooter called wanting to hit it from far beyond range, and the logo of the Iowa Hawkeyes was even with her feet as she released her record-breaking shot.
Although Clark did not want to, the game understandably took a break to acknowledge her great feat. Instead, she wanted to focus on the game and get the win. As a top school in the nation, she understood that teams show up to show her their best efforts. But today, like so many days, it wasn’t nearly enough to even slow her down. She often floats through the game, making it look so easy.
Iowa Hawkeyes Player National Attention
People tire of greatness too easily. We have seen it with the likes of LeBron James, and we are seeing it now. Fans take elite talent for granted. This becomes more true in the age of social media and instant gratification age. But failing to appreciate her skill level and meaning to the game doesn’t allow you to enjoy how she can dazzle on the court.
How often have you seen her nail step-back shots? Even while contested, often with multiple defenders. The Iowa Hawkeyes player knows how to score and shoot the basketball. Far more often than not, the swish is immediately heard after the ball leaves her hands.
However, a lot of it is due to her increased attention. Understandably, her actions and even subtle body language moments are scrutinized. But one aspect cannot be denied. Clark remains a dominant scorer and nearly impossible force to stop. Iowa Hawkeyes faithful and young, aspiring future basketball players continue to love and support her.
Iowa Hawkeyes Looking To Finish Their Season Strong
However, if given a choice, Clark would instantly pick a national championship over this record. Individual accolades are impressive. But she will look to move forward from tonight to put her team in a position to win. They will first need to close out the regular season while making a run in the Big Ten Championship.
Her toughest challenge remains. Winning in March and lasting until the end is one of the most fun but toughest gauntlets in all of sports. In a loser-goes-home scenario, an off night permanently sinks your chances of winning it all. However, with Clark on the Iowa Hawkeyes, it will likely take some unbelievable play to overcome the fight that they will show up to the game with.
