The Brooklyn Nets (21-33) are moving in a different direction. Although they entered the season without much in terms of expectations. They still managed to fall far below what the organization was hoping for. Everyone knew heading into this 2024 regular season that it would be a rebuilding year. However, the lack of development and looking completely overmatched was a step too far. Additionally, the franchise knew that things would not look good this year. But after unloading pieces, the current makeup is just not going to cut it.
Did you see this move as premature after going 43-32 last year?
Brooklyn Nets Parting Ways Mid-Season
The Brooklyn Nets fired Jacque Vaughn. The news broke early Monday morning. Although we are coming out of the All-Star Break, this news came as something of a surprise. They are yet to name an interim coach, as of the timing of the press release.
Although the side made the playoffs last year, things were trending in the wrong direction. The New York City-based team started 12 games below .500. And they sit at 11th in the standings. But losing was expected. However, the lack of internal belief ultimately made this move.
Reports are contributing that players lost faith in their head coach. Additionally, it remained doubtful that Vaughn would be able to attract free agents. Particularly after losing Kevin Durant, which spelled the beginning of the end of his tenure in the Big Apple.
Brooklyn Nets Paying for Steve Nash Era Sins
In reality, the issues stem from the previous coach. Steve Nash was hired to help relate to Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. While they forced good relationships it wasn’t able to translate on the court. Even though they made the playoffs, it was an unceremonious exit.
Being unable to capitalize on the star power and lacking internal confidence from players (notice a theme?) left the Brooklyn Nets with nothing to show for their efforts. At least during this time, they were good enough to be in discussions. However, winning a championship was not a realistic expectation.
Moreover, the team moved to Vaughn to rebuild and regain faith and belief among the players. But as the previous year they made the playoffs. However, without Durant, they saw themselves get swept by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round.
Brooklyn Nets Looking To Rebuild
Owner Joseph Tsai needs to nail this next coaching hire. Even if a temporary person fills in for the rest of this year, the next permanent head coach must hit. While some say that they can’t attract talent, we are seeing otherwise. Firstly, recent history indicates that superstars are willing to come to the Nets. Moreover, that’s an excuse.
We are seeing how a team of hardworking players is able to put it together. While we need to see how the post-season plays out, the New York Knicks are looking like one of the better teams in the NBA. At least for now, winning a championship is far from the mind. Instead, the Brooklyn Nets need to hire someone who will command the room and develop some of their talent to build a more optimistic future.
