The San Francisco 49ers are restructuring fullback Kyle Juszczyk’s contract, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported today. Juszczyk will remain the highest-paid fullback in the NFL.
The restructure will free up $1.75 million in cap room for San Francisco. While the exact terms have not yet been announced, this move confirms that Juszczyk will stay with the team. His situation was previously up in the air after he’d initially declined the 49ers’ request to take a pay cut. The 11-year veteran was originally slated to make a $5.75 million base salary along with $400,000 from per-game bonuses. The team would’ve released him if the sides hadn’t come to an agreement.
Kyle Juszczyk Career Summary
Juszczyk played tight end at Harvard for four seasons, catching 125 passes for 1,576 yards and 22 touchdowns. The Ohio native was a unanimous first-team All-Ivy League selection in 2012. In 2013, he became the first fullback drafted in school history when the Ravens selected him in the fourth round.
In 2017, Juszczyk signed with San Francisco on a four-year deal. The contract was worth $21 million, with $7 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $5 million, making him the highest-paid fullback in NFL history. Since then, he’s appeared in two Super Bowls with the club and earned a first-team All-Pro selection last season.

Juszczyk’s Utilization in the San Francisco 49ers’ Offense
Juszczyk was primarily used as a lead blocker for All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey last season, playing in 46 percent of the team’s offensive snaps. He’s the most featured fullback in the league in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, and there’s no reason to expect that to change. While he only put up 114 receiving and six rushing yards, his elite blocking provides more than enough value to the club.
San Francisco 49ers Outlook
The 49ers have now restructured Juszczyk and linebacker Fred Warner’s contracts. With Arik Armstead’s release, San Francisco should now have plenty of cap room to make more moves as the offseason continues.
