The Atlanta Falcons had one of the most exciting offseasons in the NFL. They signed Kirk Cousins to a massive deal and added other quality pieces around him. It makes this team the odds-on favorite in the NFC South. What do they need to do in the NFL Draft to solidify their position in the NFC?
Atlanta Falcons NFL Draft Needs
The Atlanta Falcons have eight picks in the NFL Draft. Four of them are in the top 100. This team filled a lot of needs in free agency but still feel a tier below in terms of Super Bowl contenders. With so much focus on the ineptitude of the offense last season, it is easy to forget the defense needs help too. Where should they spend their draft capital?
Edge Rusher
The Atlanta Falcons have ranked at the bottom of the league in sacks the past few seasons. Their problem has been closing games. One way to close out games is to get after the quarterback and get a sack on a potential game-winning drive. This team will be in a prime position to get the top-edge rusher. They might even be able to trade back and still get the player they want. It is a great spot for the Falcons, and they need to beef up their pass rush.
Wide Receiver
The Atlanta Falcons have Drake London and acquired Darnell Mooney and Rondale Moore in the offseason. Mooney and Moore feel more like the third and fourth wide receivers on a team. With the depth at the wide receiver position, the Falcons should invest in more offensive weapons. The signing of Cousins puts this team in a win-now mode. They should look to maximize their window. The NFC isn’t full of powerhouses, so a well-timed run could result in a Super Bowl berth.
Cornerback
Outside of AJ Terrell, the Atlanta Falcons are weak at the cornerback position. Furthermore, Terrell is in the last year of his deal, meaning there is no guarantee he will be on the team long-term. In the short term, a high-quality corner would beef up a secondary with Terrell and safety Jessie Bates. In the long run, a solid young corner could give the team Terrell insurance if he decides to leave for greener pastures.
One thing is for sure: the Atlanta Falcons will be fun to watch next year. With Cousins, Bijan Robinson, Kyle Pitts, and the wide receivers, this team could have one of the most high-powered offenses in the league next year.
