Arsenal and Bayern Munich played their Champions League 1st Leg match on 09/04/2024 at Emirates Stadium. The two European soccer teams didn’t let their fans down as each side put up a spirited fight. Unfortunately, their match ended in a 2-2 draw, leaving Arsenal players with mixed emotions.
Harry Kane’s Clash With Arsenal Players
Kane, Tottenham Hotspur’s top goal scorer, returned at Emirates being in great shape. However, Arsenal’s fans gave him a hostile reception.
Bukayo Saka netted Arsenal’s first goal in the 12th minute. Bayern turned the match when Serge Gnabry equalized for them in the 18th minute. William Saliba fouled Leroy Sane in the 32nd minute, earning Bayern a much-needed penalty. Kane took it and scored Bayern’s second goal and his 15th against Arsenal.
Arsenal Players’ Mixed Feelings
The Gunners weren’t in their usual best yesterday. Still, Gabriel Jesus offered Leandro Trossard an assist in the 76th minute, helping him to equalize for Arsenal. The club felt the referee should have awarded them a penalty in stoppage time after Manuel Neuer challenged Saka. Unfortunately, the referee ignored Arsenal’s appeals and the match ended 2-2.
Arsenal players were frustrated and disappointed as they left the pitch. Trossard, their late equalizer, has been a substitute most of this season and has scored six goals. His goal rescued his team from a bitter loss to the struggling German giant.
Trossard stated in a post-match interview, “It’s a mixed feeling [in the dressing room] I would say. I think we started so well in the first 15 minutes, we could have been up by two or three goals. And then you can see their quality as well, especially up front, their individual qualities, they’re so strong, especially on the counterattack, and that’s where they hurt us today. In the end, I think we’re happy obviously with the equalizer, it brings us back on equal terms and then we have to do it there.”
Is it Over for Arsenal Players?
Trossard revealed that Arsenal will visit Germany next week for a second-leg clash with Bayern. They strive to reach their first Champions League semi-finals since 2009. Trossard stated, “I think it will be a tough game there as well, they’ve shown today how they can hurt us, so I think we need to work on that for next week, and to be honest, I think if we’re at our top level, we can beat them.
I think maybe on the ball today, that wasn’t the case so we know what we’re going to work on, but hopefully, we can finish it there. The confidence is really high, even without the game today.”
